Video games of today aren't quite what they used to be back in the 80s. Back then, LCD screens superimposed on colored backgrounds were as hip as rainbow-colored knee-high socks. Everyone can use a healthy amount of retro dosage in their hi-tech lives today - certain WarioWare microgames, for example, are a testament to that.

And so, if the Game & Watch Collection for the DS just doesn't quite cut it for you, then check this out. The ThinkGeek labs have released a line of micro-sized Game & Watch devices for your retro cravings.

Nintendo Mini Classics - Image 1

Clocked at US$ 8.99 each, there's currently two games in their "Nintendo Mini Classics" line: Donkey Kong and Legend of Zelda. They're exact reincarnations of the 80s graphics that you were used to back in the day - only the device itself has been reduced to keychain-size.

The same format of the original games apply. Donkey Kong has Mario jumping over the rolling barrels all the way to the top to save the raging ape's hostage. Legend of Zelda will still have the top screen as the dungeon map, while the bottom has the individual dungeons themselves. Put that NDS down for now, here's to hoping rainbow-colored knee-high socks make a come back, too!

Shenmue - 'nuf said

There are emulators, there's the Sega Genesis Collection, and then there are emulators (again). Sigh... Don't get us wrong, we like playing retro games, and we're thankful for all the effort being made by the homebrew community to bring us hacks of titles we've always enjoyed, then there's the Virtual Console and PlayStation Store for the next-gen consoles.

Even with Sega's console development now virtually non-existent, we still see the resurfacing of their classics in the many emulations, both official and unofficial. But it still begs the question: don't you ever wish the original devs would actually make a sequel to some of our beloved titles?

The guys over at Seganerds posted this question towards Sega, and listed up what they think are worthy titles to sequel. Here's the list, and for guys who were too young to remember these game titles, the full details are in the source link. As for us, the fact these dudes mentioned Shenmue and Panzer Dragoon, we know they're not just ranting - good choices there.
  1. Shenmue
  2. NiGHTS into Dreams
  3. Streets of Rage
  4. Panzer Dragoon Saga
  5. Skies of Arcadia
  6. Phantasy Star
  7. Ecco the Dolphin
  8. Legend of Oasis
  9. Samba de Amigo
  10. ChuChu Rocket!

SpoutDSDeveloper Sektor has his hands full these past few days developing and improving on several homebrew titles. First, he gave everyone a scare with the release of HexenDS.

This time around, going a little more retro, Sektor presents SpoutDS. A bit of history first, Spout is actually a caveflier shooting game first created for a handheld LCD console. It was ported then to Windows/SDL and after that to Unix/SDL. The first DS version was actually done by Birslip.

Much like the first version, the objective of the game is to get as high as possible without crashing or the time running out. To get out of the caves, players must use the ship's exhaust to erode the surrounding areas. The detailed controls of the game are as follows:
  • A/B/X/Y - shoot, accelerate, spout, start
  • left - turn left
  • right - turn right
  • start - pause
  • select - LCD swap
  • L - toggle top backlight
  • R - toggle bottom backlight
A reminder to those players who own a GBA flashcart, please know that the game will be saved to the SRAM. CF/SD FAT users on the hand, will have SpoutDS saved to the root (spout.sco).

Marshmallow Duel DS

Here's one interactive homebrew game for you and your friend on the DS. The Marshmallow Duel DS is Pospi's first DS game, but for a first timer, it's pretty swell.

So you got some hidden angst towards your pal? Invite him to play this game then. The mechanics are simple. Your goal is to push your friend into the water, so that you'll come out as the obvious victor. It's a deathmatch, this game. To kill your friend (that doesn't sound so right,eh?), you may choose to attack him on his other end of the screen, or you can use any of the 18 weapons that are randomly generated from above. We don't know if there's some kind of weapons factory up there, but the point is, it's giving you ammo, so no reason to complain right there.

The game itself can be viewed via the top screen, while the bottom part of the DS displays the scores and other knick-knacks. According to Pospi, the game's been intentionally designed to be very retro and so there's no real use of the DS's more unique features.

You can download the zipfile right here for the game, as well as the debug version, so that you can let POSPI know which class and functions are being problematic. He does admit, after all, that it's still in its beta stages, hence is still a little unstable.
He also plans to add wifi multiplayer, statistics saving, stylus menu controls, and stability and bug fixes.
