Nintendo DS - Image 1It's Pacman-ish with a twist. Here with Crok DS, you play a glutton of an enzyme, who eats everything on the screen. But there are other hungry enzymes out to grab your food away from you, so you better move fast.

MarcaDS, an arcade simulator for Nintendo DS - Image 1Alekmaul's MarcaDS is an emulator for arcade games for the Nintendo DS. The list of supported games is quite long (you can check the gamelist.txt file that's included in the download file below).

Here's what's new in MarcaDS v4.0 (as taken from Alekmaul's readme):
  • New design (thanks again Lobo) and new logo (thanks to you too DayDream)
  • Add SN76496 and AY-8910 sound emulation, lots of games have now sound.
  • Solomon's key do not have any more background pb.
  • Add Video Hustler, The Billiards, DigDug (2 sets), Hexa, Bank Panic.
  • Galaga (and clones) is playables.
  • Pinball Action is now playable.
  • The background pb in Phoenix (and clones) is fixed.
  • Also for 1942 background pb !
  • Add compressed ZIP support.
  • Add CRC checking to avoid compatibility problems.
  • Add Hish score management.
  • SELECT to add coins (A becomes the main shoot button).
  • No more "Player 2" mode.
  • No more clones (less games but only the originals ;)).
  • Mario becomes Masao to have the sound.
  • Ms Pacman becomes Ms Pacman (bootleg) and the zip file mspacmab.zip.
  • Piranha becomes Piranha (hack) and the zip file piranhah.zip.
  • Jr Pacman becomes playable.
  • Fire pb in Arkanoid fixed.
  • Using now EFSLIB, thanks Noda ;).
So that's a lot of changes from when MarcaDS v3.0 came out last year!

As always, please read the readme text before you install the application.

And yes, since this is an arcade emulator, you're going to need uncompressed (unzipped) ROMs. But, as Alekmaul says (and we echo the sentiment): "Do not ask me about ROMS, I don't have them."

retro gaming shop in Akihabara - Image 1

The nostalgia we find in retro games in Virtual Console seems to pale in the face of a particular store in Akihabara in Tokyo, Japan. What does it sell? Probably all the retro games older gamers played during their formative years.

We assume the store is pretty hard to miss. The store is spans three storeys and pretty much advertises for itself with window art. One giant Mario, Pacman, and even a screenshot of Castlevania. A giant Mario statue welcomes customers into the store. Within lies a number of retro consoles (Famicom, Family Computer Disk System, and the Super Famicom), plus shelves upon shelves of the good old cartridges. Their other merchandise include a Nintendo wristwatch, a Super Mario clock (with the fire obstacle as the second counter) and a Homer.

Whoa. Talk about retro. According to Tokyo Times (who visited the store), there's even a small arcade on the top floor. This can most possibly be considered gamer heaven by a whole lot of older gamers.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Image 1At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), CVG stumbled on the first multiplayer demo of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

We featured some multiplayer screens just a couple of days ago, showing our intrepid hero running around a maze-like map littered with power ups and of course, baddies. At the GDC demo, one player controlled Link while the other controlled the three bad guys by drawing their routes on the touchscreen. Link has to gather as many Tri-Force pieces (picking up big pieces caused the player's movements to slow down). During each game once the villain player  captures Link, players switch sides.

That's pretty much like playing Pacman minus the AI. Anyway, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is set for release in Q4. While you wait, you can check out the GDC trailer by clicking here.

MarcaDS_V01_1

Alekmaul has released MarcaDS. MarcaDS is an arcade emulator. It uses the same principle as Mame but it's not using its code,Mame is too huge for our little DS :), but it's just my opinion. To use this emulator, you must have compatibles ROMS with NO COMPRESSION ZIP format. With this version, emulated games are:

Pacman
– MsPacman
– CrushRoller
– Pengo

You can get it in our Nintendo DS Download section [here].

Atari_2600_4B_Large

The port of Stella (atari 2600 emulator) to the Nintendo DS is well under way. Here is how the project is coming so far:

TheChuckster:
I am working on a port of the Atari 2600 emulator Stella. So far almost the entire code base has been ported. Download a ROM and put it in the data directory. Name it "pacman.bin" and recompile. The emulator will load, MD5 sum, and execute it... It won't work in [any DS] emulators... [It] has been quite optimized and plays at a smooth playable speed now thanks to a faster framebuffer drawing routine. I will continue to work on it though and add sound.

You can get the source in our NDS Download section [here]
