Nintendo DS - Image 1Controlling robots via remote control isn't a new thing, but it certainly is a great feat to do a homebrewed robot remote control application for the Nintendo DS. And what makes this program, the PekeePilot, even more remarkable is that there is just not one, but six ways of controlling the Pekee robot (including motion sensor!). Check more info and watch the demo video in the full article!

DS Prints Money - Image 1Just about a year ago, we reported about Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata's intention to market the Wii and the DS to mothers, the elderly, and to young women, saying that "It's a challenge, like trying to sell cosmetics to men."  Well what do you know, Nintendo managed to fulfill that promise, just a little more than a year after they made the announcement.

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter said that Nintendo's new diverse games such as Wii Sports helped the motion sensor-driven console to capture the new gaming market, and leaving its rivals Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox chasing in its wake. "It really is fun," said Pachter about Wii Sports. "Anyone can do it."

Avid Wii gamers (and there's a lot of them) constantly hold Wii parties, and even recruited the help of party planning online service Evite in starting up even more Wii parties from birthdays to family reunions.

Nintendo's handheld, the DS, is also basking in its own share of success. Games such as Brain Age were targeted towards senior citizens, while Nintendogs became a main staple of DS-toting pre-teen girls.

Even Pachter's wife is addicted to Nintendo's pet dog simulation. According to the analyst:

I know before the girls got Nintendogs, my wife had never played a video game in her life and she was completely opposed on moral and educational grounds to my kids even picking up a DS. Now she thinks it is the cutest thing she has ever seen.

With that kind of success in their hands, the idea of Nintendo being able to sell cosmetics to men doesn't sound as impossible as before.

Nintendo Japan has just released a new peripheral for the Nintendo DS. The peripheral, attached to the GBA cartridge, will take up the entire bottom part of the DS and put it on a sort of platform.

Slide controller peripheral for the DS - Image 1

The platform is a motion sensor, and acts as another way to input movement into the DS. You move the DS around on a flat surface and the whole handheld suddenly becomes a mouse with a screen. It's interesting to see how that would work though. It's one thing to sit down and move a stylus around to move your character, but to have to move the whole DS on a steady surface may defeat the whole purpose of gaming-on-the-go. Or, on the optimistic side of things, quite possibly redefine it.

The peripheral will be bundled up with a new game for the DS, Slide Adventure: Mag Kid, which has you play a robot that rebuilds itself from parts of destroyed enemies. The whole thing will be priced at JP ¥ 5,800 (US$ 49) in Japan but there's no word yet if it will be released for the US.

Let's see: PSP-styled digital nubs on a DS, PS2 sticks on a PSP (heck the only thing missing is plugging the Xbox 360 guide button into either and we've got ourselves a three-way haxfest... er, forget I said that). And grandpasmurf of AcidMODS informs us of more cross-pollination going on in the control department. This time, he's plugging in a couple of motion sensors/accelerometers onto the DS and PSP so that they can be played like a SIXAXIS.

Yes, SIXAXIS. For those of you who want a Wiimote, find an IR sensor and bar to include in the package.

The demo unit is a DS Lite, but you will note that it plugs through a mini-USB port, so grandpasmurf says it can definitely be used with the PSP, too. Absent of any other details from grandpasmurf - hey, pay us a visit and drop us the 411, if you can - we can speculate that the said mini-USB port wires to the D-pad, similar to the Ghetto Joystik/Ben Heck PSP analog mods.

Other than that, well, we can offer little else in the way of detail. Like we said: grandpasmurf, anytime you want to drop a line, our Comments section is always open. And one other thing: we wonder if this means we've got some Wiidiots who're about to turn the DS (or the PSP) into Flying Game Controllers of Doom (TM). Oh noes.

Besides grandpasmurf, thanks also to luke for the heads-up! Now heads down! Flying handheld incoming!
