LMP-NG - Image 1The developments keep on coming for the previously discontinued Lick's Media Player. Now taken over by Lucas, The iPod-looking DS media player has moved out of alpha and into version 1.02.

While there currently isn't a changelog for 1.02, we did manage to find some information on the 1.01 release, though it isn't much:

It's just a small bugfix with handling non-ASCII chars from RC3.

I uploaded 1.01 which fixes a bug with EZFlash.

But I promise I'll post detailed changelogs from now on.

You'll have to remember to DLDI patch the application if you want it to work, by the way. In any case, just stick the appropriate file into your flash card and run the app to get it to work. Don't hesitate to show it to your friends though, so they can be awed by the fact that you have a DS and an iPod in one neat package.

DS music on this - Image 1Well, Lick has all but completely discontinued the Lick's Media Player that he developed for the DS. That, however, doesn't mean that we still can't enjoy some Media Player goodness.

In trying to come up with a way to finish Lick's Media Player, a GBAdev user named Lucas apparently managed to rewrite it from scratch through C, rather than the C++ it was originally written in. As he mentions on the their boards,

In the end, it became a complete rewrite. No more C++, only pure C. At this time, I only have some basic functionality, WAV playback (files must end in .wav) and libmad playback (files must end in .mp3).

I need some feedback, if you can try, just download at http://www.cecm.usp.br/~lucas/lmp-ng/. Theres two versions, a .nds and a .ds.gba. Both are compiled with libfat DLDI, so you can patch if your flashcart does not work out of the box. The source is also in the same page.

He also notes that this is his first homebrew, so there are bound to be bugs. Still, it looks (and sounds) okay to us, so what's not to like? Maybe we can help him improve upon what Lick originally started, eh?

MoonShellYes, one of the pillars of Nintendo DS homebrew is back with updates on his most exposed creation. Infantile Paralysiser's here with the latest update of his famous media player, MoonShell. It was only two days ago when this guy came up with the first Beta for v1.6, and here he is again with his bag of updates.

Well, Beta 4's changelog isn't as beefy as the last release, but a step forward no matter how small is still welcome news. What the dev did in this release is build the driver of M3Simply/R4 and EZ5. Beta 3 tend to the MSPV50 (Sound effects) plug-in, while Beta 2 took care of the bug that causes memory access violation.

As always, Infantile Paralysiser did a great job! Kudos to him and we hope to hear more updates about MoonShell. For now, the download link is right down there, go ahead and have fun with it!

DS-Xtreme

Another new feature has been announced for what is being billed as the definitive DS homebrew flashcart, and this one is sure to make music junkies happy. Yes folks, the DS-Xtreme will have music playback capabilities straight out of the box.

While there are a lot of excellent homebrew apps out there that let you play music on your DS, this makes it easier for DS owners who are not quite so familiar with the whole DS homebrew scene. The DS-X dev team spent quite some time thinking about whether or not to include the music playback feature, and it will no doubt be one of the reasons that  people will pick up a DS-Xtreme.

According to Leto, a member  of the DS-Xtreme dev team, the flashcart's built-in music player will "scan the filesytem for music files, and automatically organize them into a music library for you, by artist, album, genre etc. From that music library you can either pick an artist, genre, song, album etc. and play it immediately, or you can queue it up into an on-the-fly playlist."

DS-Xtreme will also have full shuffle capabilities and repeat functionality, as well as a skinning engine that will allow users to create some fantastic media player skins. There is also one other feature that has not been made public yet, and the DS-Xtreme dev team says that a video of it will soon be made available. All this news is really making us even more hyped for DS-Xtreme's October 12 release date.

Max MediaOur previous coverage told you about the latest upgrade to Max Media Player from Datel. With 1.2, MMP allowed for video playback support. 1.22 fixes some issues with the 1.2 to improve your mp3 and video playback experience.

As always, just grab the bootme.ds from the file, and move the file into your DS's boot directory, through whatever means you usually use to move stuff from the comp to the DS. Afterwards, restarting the DS will start up 1.22. Simple, no?

Here's the changelog for 1.22.
  • Full native video and MP3 playback through Max Media Player
  • Version 1.22 is a minor revision to 1.21 that fixes a bug with stereo MP3s being played back in mono. Use 1.22 to extend the functionality of the built in MP3 player to now support video playback, natively from within Max Media Player
  • Updates in this version:
    • Fixed stereo sound problem in 1.21
    • All previous updates
Thanks a lot, badam for the tip!

DSDoomAfter some changes to the source code and with support from MisterSentient, developer Brumi got a version of DSDoom running with Max Media Player on a Max Media Dock (CF-Card). It's still in beta version though and the Moonshell Team implemented the MMD FAT code.

DSDoom is a port of PrBoom to the Nintendo DS. PrBoom is a version of Id Software's classic 3D PC shooter game, Doom.

To get DSDoom running, first download the DSDoom file then follow the installation instructions. Then grab the modified nds-file. Place all the files in the root-directory of your cf-card (including your wad-file). It's important to rename the "dsdoom_mmds.nds" to "bootme.nds", otherwise, you won't be able to run the game.
