Nintendo DS - Image 1Those interested with the evolution of gaming may want to install homebrew developer ETk's Chip 8 emulator for the Nintendo DS, Chip8me (previous release here). Created to make video games easily programmable to certain computers, Chip 8 certainly is a piece of gaming history worth looking back on. This particular release now sports some improvements, such as directory support, debug fixes, and SCHIP support.

MegaETkIt's been quite a while since ETk last updated his DS homebrew game MegaETk (four months in fact), but thank goodness for the holiday break from school, he's now back with v1.03.

Hailed as one of the best DS homebrew games ever, MegaETk v1.03 packs in a lot of fixes and changes. And of course, he's also thrown in a bunch of new stuff to further improve the already kickass game he developed.

As you can see from the screenshot on the right, this is one brew that could potentially kick retail games' asses that's why we think it's definitely deserving to be placed right up there on the list of awesome DS brews. So, what's changed in v1.03?

Changelog
:
  • Hero movement speed when clicking New Game fixed (not 100% sure)
  • Fixed the overload in final boss level when there are too many monsters in the screen.
  • Fixed the teleport of the subway from level 7-2
  • Fixed 'Shoot x2' item location on level 7-2. Now it's reachable
  • Shop doesn't freeze now when you buy all items and try to buy an empty one.
  • When you enter to a boss area, all shoots in the screen are destroyed. Now you can't get hit by a monster who shot you just before entering the area.
  • Now you can skip credits. (Also changed the text to "The End")
  • Unabled Level Editor option (just wait a bit more :P)
  • More Readme language files! Chinese Traditional and Chinese Simplified. Thanks to yeyezai and huimi :)
Thanks to Master InuYasha for the heads up!

MegaETk Level EditorIt's only been a few days from the first release (non-beta) of MegaETK by ETk and he has already updated his game twice. We did not cover the first update, but we will cover this update that will list all the changes from the original release to the most current one. MegaETk is such a well polished and amazing game that when I showed it to a few friends, they thought it was a retail game. The second I told them it wasn't, they were speechless.

MegaETk is indeed one of the best NDS games. Although it may not be very original being a clone of Megaman, it makes up for it in its original features, weapons, level concepts and overall presentation. If you haven't tried this game out yet, I suggest you do even if you do not have a NDS (PC emulators). See the full change log (including the previous release) below -
  • Fix: The problem that was making to stop the music after level 1 ends is fixed now.
  • Fix: Now you can't click 2 options at the same time on the level selection menu
  • Fix: The problem with the text "+XXX EP" is fixed.. bosses that have more than 32768 will sohw the EP good now.
  • Fix: Changed "Writting file.." for "Writing file.."
  • Fix: Jump power up fixed, you won't jump too much the first time you buy it.
  • Fix: Shop bug that made you able to buy a non-existing item and HP power up again fixed. (Now you won't be able to get 1000 HP XD)
  • Fix: Sound when buying an item 2 times fast corrected (the second one wasn't playing).
  • Changes: First boss will not stop on the right allways now.
  • Changes: The wait time in the screen showing level number and lives for levels X-2,X-3 is shorter now.
  • Added: nofat version to avoid the FAT init and possible crashes for incompatible flashcards
  • Others: Added readme translated in italian ->"Readme-IT.txt"
  • 1.02 Change - Compatibilty with ezIV and g6 (no-fat version)
  • 1.02 Change - Level Editor (Beta)

MegaETk ScreenshotSeveral months ago, ETk released his first public beta of his popular Megaman clone called MegaETk. This game has been in product for several months before the first public beta, and today has been the day in which the game has been released in its full form. ETk released MegaETk in the NeoFlash Summer Coding Competition (2006) and faces some tough competition amongst several other A++ homebrew games.

MegaETk is a Megaman clone featuring all you could ever wish for in a homebrew game! You must help MegaETk take back Earth from the dreaded invasion of 4 monsters and their minions. As MegaETk, you will defeat several unique monsters with some very unique weapons! The overall level design is perfect, the presentation of the game is of retail-quality, and I'm just left speechless as I play this flawless game! So, want to see how this game matches up to all the hype - then download below!

Note: If you do not own a NDS, you can always play on the PC emulator - DeSmuME!

MegaETk is a homebrew game for the Nintendo DS. Based on the popular Megaman series of games, MegaETk's most interesting feature is its capability to let players play in levels that they themselves created.

ETk reports that the game menu for MegaETk is almost done. The first boss has also been added, but there's still no HP bar as of now.

Here's the list of updates:

-Added: Game menu to select level, check hero status, etc..
-Added: Boss loader, etc.. all functions to play with a boss and move it
-Removed: level complete screen, it will go directly to shop now
-Fix: Hero's arm now blinks when hero does.
-Fix: Fixed collision with max X on map.
-Fix: Fixed arm position when using the stylus and moving to the wrong way..
-Fix: Sprites animations are paused when pausing the game.
-Most important Fix: After adding the level select menu. The game was running at very slow fps (3-6), after 1 hour I fixed that (phew..) optimizing and removing unneeded code :)
-Added: First step to save data.

Time for a screenshot. ETk says to ignore the door. It shouldn't be there.

MegaETkETk has released a list of the updates he has made to the upcoming version of MegaETk, a game based on the Megaman games. This game's really interesting because of the custom-level creation features included in the game that will allow you to play in levels that you create yourself.

The developer fixed more bugs than added features. That said, though, he's included a new bubble effect and a "level complete screen." Here's a complete list of the changes he made to MegaETk:
  • Fixed: The bug that doesn't let you jump while you dash is fixed now.
  • Fix: Dash jump is shorter than a Normal jump
  • Fix: Now you can only dash when you crouch
  • Fix: fixed sprite gfx glitches when they are created out of screen
  • Fix: the arm will not disappear when you are on x=0
  • Fix: the shots appear where the arm is, and not in the center of megaetk
  • MegaETkFix: fixed bouncing shots
  • Fix: fixed arm gfx glitches when there is an item that doesn't rotate
  • New: added bubble raising effect
  • New: added E-Points to use in the future to buy power-ups, weapons, etc..
  • New: added Level complete screen
  • New: added new static-monster that aims to you and shots with angle
  • New: added small and medium sized particles. (Only using small and medium now, big particles aren't cool :P)
  • New: particles movement changed-> if there is a shot going to right and collides with a wall, the particles will go to left. same with shots going to left, up and down..
  • New: added a time counter
  • New: hero can aim with D-Pad holding the Y button now

MegaETkETk has posted some more information on his upcoming MegaETk version. MegaETk is a clone of Megaman. This clone takes it even higher than current Megaman games by adding a level editor in which the gamer could completely take control of the game. Some options even allow you to add bouncing effects to weapons, and create your own sprites. This has got to be one of the best homebrew games for the NDS right now that is still marked as a work-in-progress.

The game has been in production for several months now, and it is looking better and better each day! There was an early version of the game released to the public and showed how great the game was. I was blown away by how smooth the gameplay was, and even enjoyed it using DeSmuMe (NDS emulator) on my PC. So, now you are wondering what has been changed in the game, well here are the changes as told by ETk himself –

  • Fixed Collision system (yes.. once again)
  • Fixed "load event" code (loading items, monsters, etc..). This was making the game load a monster and unload infinite times at the same time (incl. gfx glitches)
  • Fixed hero arm. There is no space between the arm and hero in some angles now
  • Fixed x,y locations for where the shots appear (hero and monster shots).
  • New level system: now all level gfx+pal are saved once (making the .nds file smaller)
  • Added option to select tiles gfx and palette for each level (tool updated for this too). This is the 1st step to make the level editor too :)
  • Added 2 more particle colours
  • Optimized particle creation code (particles will be more "boom" now.. like moving more)
  • Now if all 128 sprites are in use, the game will show an Error message saying that if you continue it will have gfx glitches
  • Added more debug options
  • Added sounds: weapon 1 shot, item, hit floor (when falling)
  • Added an option to change what the shots will do when they make collision with walls: disappear, bounce forever, bounce X times
  • Added a counter for kill sprites (needed for flamethrower and future new effect)
  • Added new weapon: flamethrower
  • Added new weapon: bouncing-ball
  • Now monster will have gravity effects :)
  • New AI for specified monsters: jump if there is something in front of you that will not allow you continue walking (stones, etc..)
  • Added new monster: Blue Monster (doesn't have a name yet xD)
