DS homebrew - Warhawk DS Remake - Image 1You may already know that the PS3 game Warhawk is just a roided-up remake of the PSOne Warhawk, but even before the PlayStation game, there was a Warhawk shmup title released for the Commodore 64. That's the Warhawk that this DS remake is based on. Screenshots and details after the jump.

Symphonic Game Music Concert 2007 coming to Leipzig - Image 1Dedicating to the avid gamers' world of game music devotion, the GCDC 2007 to start this coming August will also be seeing a live performance by the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague on popular game soundtracks from Starcraft, Final Fantasy IX, Ragnarok 2, Stranglehold, Metal Gear Solid 2: Snake Eater, Secret of Mana and The Abbey Turrican 2.

Conducted by Andy Brick, the orchestra will also perform popular classics in medley form in salute to the Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga as pioneering game platforms for the game industry, as stated by an official press release.

The performance will be held at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig on August 22, 8 p.m. and won't be an official part of the GCDC 2007 opening ceremony. Also to appear at the concert is Japanese star opera singer Izumi Masuda, singer Conny Kollet from Germany fame, and Konami-sponsored percussionist Rony Barrak.

Kollet is popular for her performances at the Symphonic Game Music Concert, of which this concert will be the fifth of the series, although many will know her for her rendering of the title song for SpellForce: The Breath of Winter.

Rony Barrak will be performing his version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Snake Eater together with the FILMharmonic Orchestra. Masuda, despite being an opera singer, is more inclined to pop-opera pieces, and could be identified as the same one who rendered the song "Distant Worlds" from Final Fantasy at the concert "VOICES: music from Final Fantasy." Tickets are already being sold as of this moment.

Last year, 10tacle studios announced that they would be releasing Boulder Dash for the PSP and DS. For the guys unfamiliar with the game, Boulder Dash was originally created in the 80s for the Apple II, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Atari 400/800 home computers.

The game puts players behind the controls of Rockford, whose job is to dig through caves collecting gems and diamonds while avoiding hostile creatures and falling rocks. Fast forward to today, we we have received new details for this upcoming game, which has been renamed Boulder Dash-Rocks!:
  • Completely revamped in-game graphics
  • Release date moved to the fourth quarter 2007.
  • The game will feature tools to help the players on their diamond-collecting, such as bombs and laser guns - the latter can be loaded with different types of ammo.
  • Each laser ammo has a different characteristic: some have the ability to freeze enemies, while others pull objects towards the player.
  • Five game modes: Single-player, Multi-player, and three other TBA game modes.
  • Unique game modes for the PSP and DS (TBA).
Just keep posted as 10tacle reveals more details on this upcoming game in the near future

Old school videogames enthusiasts are in for another treat, as System 3 announced today that it will be re-launching the classic Epyx Commodore 64 title, Impossible Mission. The game will feature several special enhancements and will be released for the DS, PSP, PS2 and Wii.

Originally released 25 years ago, Impossible Mission was the first game to use real synthesized speech, an incredible development when first unleashed on the 8-bit formats. The original game included a random game-map system which ensured that no two games were the same. The inclusion of brand new graphics and sound ensures that Impossible Mission is primed to thrill a brand new audience.

While there's no Cruise Tom or Rhames Ving in this game (see what I did there?), Impossible Mission does feature new graphics, 3D objects, new sound effects and music. Gameplay remains impressively loyal with the game layout changing for every new game. There are now three main characters to choose from plus a brand new tutorial mode. Players can now chose from three game modes: new, original and for the purist, a hybrid mode with the original gameplay using the updated graphics.

The PSP version includes a new feature which allows players to send a full copy of their game to a friend by wireless so they can try it for themselves. No details yet on what exclusive features the other console releases will have, but you can check out the DS screenshots below for a sneak peek. Impossible Mission is slated for a Q2 release.

Memories of the game that was the NES Karate Kid come back to fore upon seeing this other classic, the System 3 Commodore 64 International Karate, in action on a DS. This is the old game has been brought to life on the DS, thanks to mrsid. By the way, the game also made appearances on the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and Atari ST , but  this version just emulates the one released on the Commodore 64.

Although mrsid says "emulated", this isn't running off an emulator. This is a single-package stand-alone game (okay, the single package contains ds.gba and .nds flavors, but you get the picture). And although this writer was but a wee laddie in diapers when the Commodore 64 came out (and thus his first experience with karate video games was - yes, The Karate Kid), it is all but easy to play this game like old times, thanks to a handy control guide that displays on the touchscreen when you depress the L trigger.

CrocoDSThe Amstrad CPC (Color Personal Computer) was a series of 8-bit home computers from the 80s and early 90s. The Amstrad CPC was designed for head-on competition with the Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum systems. The CPC came in four configurations:

  • 464 (Tape deck, 64 KB RAM, square-edged keyboard)
  • 472 (Tape deck, 72K RAM)
  • 664 (3" Floppy disk drive, 64K RAM)
  • 6128 (3" Floppy disk drive, 128K RAM, more PC-like keyboard)
Why are we telling you this? Because we came across a CPC 6128 emulator for Nintendo DS called CrocoDS Alpha v0.1a by My Ketchup Is Dead. Okay, we're not sure about the developer's name. Our "French" tongue is limited to four-letter words.

CrocoDS Alpha v0.1a allows the loading of files SNA and DSK in the root of the GBA cartridge (use of the LIBFAT of picodriveds) while pressing the Select button. Pressing R starts again the emulator. Pressing  L switches between the emulation joystick and keypad. The developer is working to replace "the core Z80 out of C by a version asm (I think of directing myself towards the bookshop DrZ80 Reesy to create for MAME), to add the support of the zippées images." The bitmap of the keyboard is temporary.

This is where our limited French comes to an end.

Ó

The Commodore 64 (C64) was the hottest home computer in the 1980s with around 25 million units sold. It was, in fact, the best selling computer in the world before you know who came along. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that tons of software, both games and apps, were written for the system.

One of those apps is the Graphical Environment Operating System or GEOS, an operating system and graphical user interface for the C64 developed by Berkely Softworks.

The GEOS' features included:

  • Cut-and-paste text, graphics, and other objects
  • Drag-and-drop file management such as copying, printing, and deleting
  • Support for numerous printers, input devices, and disk drives
  • Numerous point-and-click applications
  • An easy to use GUI interface
  • Support for memory expansion, process switching, and print spooling
Anyway, Andreas Varga has released a homebrew version of the GEOS for the DS. So if you're old enough to feel nostalgic about GEOS or you're a new fan of the program but don't have the C64, geoDS v1.0 is here. To install the app, copy the "geos" directory in this package into the root directory of your Nintendo DS CF/SD card. Andreas has only tested geosDS v.10 on M3 with SD card, so performance may vary if you're using other cards. For more info view the how-to demo video.

The Nintendo Wii is being packaged with a squeaky clean image, in the sense that it's family-friendly and its games would cater to the wants of every member. But video gaming, just like real life, isn't all bright and sunshiny or nice and sweet - and that's where the game Sadness enters the picture.

Too bad that its developer, Nibris, has not been divulging more details about it. But to compensate for the lack of info to this hauntingly mysterious title for the Wii, the Polish game developer opened up about another game that they're brewing for the Nintendo DS and the Wii.

The new game they're developing is called Double Pang. From the title itself, you may already have an idea that this is not as dark and disturbing as Sadness. What is it all about? Well, the game is actually a new version of Pang (or Buster Bros. in the U.S.A), it is a one or two player arcade game which is the brainchild of Mitchell Corporations. It first saw the light of mass production in 1989 and was produced for various home systems such as ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Atari ST among many others.

Basically, the goal of the game is for you to go through 16 countries with each of 'em having three levels. What you do is destroy a series of balloons using a harpoon gun. When you have eliminated the Helium-filled thingamajigs, they will progressively divide into two wherein the smallest bubbles will go kaput when shot. Power-ups such as vulcan missile, free time clock, and double harpoon are present in the game.

Nibris is planning on unveiling the DS version on April 2007, while the Wii version is planned to come out on September. And basing from our last report, this game would be released earlier than Sadness (Q4 2007 or Q1 2008) and Raid Over the River (Wii release Q3 2008, DS release Q2-Q3 2007). Let's hope that Nibris keeps their word this time around and for goodness sake, talk about how Sadness is shaping up!
