DS homebrew - Image 1Tetrominout is a mash-up of two classic games: Tetris and Breakout. This hybrid homebrew game for the DS is the brainchild of developer Karakh. The objective here is just like in Tetris: you have to create lines using the shaped blocks that fall one after the other. The Breakout part comes in the form of a ball that will obliterate what you've constructed so far.

Breakout DS by scognito - Image 1 Breakout DS by scognito - Image 2

Remember a couple of weeks ago when scognito2 had released his Neoflash competition homebrew entry? Well, he's updated it! And he's giving you Breakout DS, now with a Super Mario spin to it: music, menu, backgrounds, and even power-ups! For those of you who aren't too familiar with his previous version, here's everything you need to know:

Control Types:
  • D-pad for moving the paddle left-right
  • Stylus input moves the paddle, tap the ball for launch it
Game Modes:
  • Normal mode: clear 10 levels, each one with its song and background, from mario 1 to super mario world 2
  • Random mode: infinite levels, random generated
  • Custom mode: draw your levels and play with them! (10 max)
Difficulty Levels:
  • Hard: If you lose a life all the bricks will respawn
  • Easy: If you lose a life all the bricks will NOT respawn
Powerups:
  • Red mushroom: double size
  • Blue mushroom: half size
  • Fire flower: super ball
  • Magnet: you can catch the ball
The developer has released some known issues, and please note that all save types (levels, hall of fame) are in ram, meaning when you switch off your DS everything will be cleared. Also, the music restarts when the game is paused. It doesn't loop because palib doesn't support the feature to know if a channel is busy.

It's interesting how he was able to incorporate the mushroom and the flower power-ups into his game. The custom level feature works like a charm and maybe in the future, he can expand that feature to custom themes (not just levels)! Like a Metroid theme or something. That would be cool!

Karate Kid? Nah. Too 80s. Enter the Dragon? Too serious. Xiaolin Showdown? Just the right mix. You can be one of Master Fung's dragon-in-training as you play Konami's game for the DS of the same title. Take on the characters of Omi, Raimundo Pedrosa, Kimiko Tohomiko or Clay Bailey as they fight against the evil that is Jack Spicer. Release date is sometime in November.

Craig Harris of IGN describes this game being developed by Razorback as a "Double Dragon style brawler done in an isometric ¾ view." The demo has demonstrated some good and bad points. Characters were a bit slow in movement and collision detection was off, but, smashing, lifting and throwing objects at enemies or at switches are fine and comes a lot into the game's early stages.

You can also treat yourselves to a variety of mini-games like "Wind Hockey" which is a touch screen version of air hockey, a "Breakout" challenge, a four player top-down challenge and bowling, that shows the most potential among the others mentioned. All these games will be unlockable in the main game as well as being fully playable outside of the battle. It supports the DS' download play feature for a high kicking multiplayer showdown.

Breakout DS - Image 1 Breakout DS - Image 2

Here's a great little game that has been released in the DS Game section of the Neoflash homebrew coding competition. This classic Arkanoid/Breakout clone sees you using the paddle to bounce the ball and destroy the bricks. With this game by scognito2, you can use the stylus or the d-pad to move the paddle, whichever one suits you best.

This version comes with two modes: normal mode with 10 levels, and random generated level (infinite levels). Bonuses included are: double size, half size, fireball and magnet. If you have ever player Arkanoid or Breakout, which I'm sure most of you have, then you will undoubtedly enjoy this title. Considering that this is scognito2's first attempt at a DS game, he deserves to do well in the Neoflash competition.
