Activision's fiscal 2008 Q2 report is in, and the results are very encouraging. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PC) is bringing the house down as it earns over US$ 100 million in its first week to seal its reputation as one of gaming's most successful launches ever. Activision is definitely on a roll and has openly predicted that Q3 2007 just might yield income of about US$ 1 billion. Want to know the full financial details? We recently reported that British game studio Bizarre Creations has inked an acquisition deal with giant publisher Activision. The deal places the former as an in-house development wing of the publisher, retaining its identity under a bigger corporate mantle. Many were shocked as to why Bizarre Creations would sign such a pact with Activision, noting that the firm is doing very well on its own with various publishing partners handling its deals. Commercial Director Sarah Chudley explains the rationale in a report by GamesIndustry. Chudley says that the successful run that both Bizarre Creations and Activision are having makes the partnership an ideal one. Activision is looking for good developers that will create new games for them while the developer wants to focus on creating quality content without the hassles of trying to strike deals before a project materializes. "All we want to concentrate on is making great games, rather than the pressures of running a pretty large development studio, searching out deals," says Chudley as she expresses relief in not having to spend months on legal and business issues anymore. "We want to be doing what we love, in the way that we enjoy, without having to think about being big business people," she adds. "It was a long and hard path coming to this decision, but we were driven by our desire to continue being able to deliver great games, and to enjoy doing it." Chudley says that Bizarre Creations also chose Activision because of its "hands-off policy" on their developers. They don't tend to cramp up the creative styles of the teams working on games, preserving their individuality and freedom. She cites Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare developers Infinity Ward and Tony Hawk creators Neversoft as prime examples. "They are an extremely successful publisher who has a big passion for games, and who have great respect for all of our teams," Chudley concludes. New IPs under Activision are yet to be announced. |

Official word from Sierra Entertainment regarding Geometry Wars' Nintendo outing has finally come around. Kuju Entertainment's new Nintendo-exclusive title Geometry Wars: Galaxies, the follow-up for Bizarre Creations' hit XBLA title Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, has been officially confirmed for the DS and the Wii. Check out screenshots from the Wii version below.
Geometry Wars: Galaxies features an all new mission-based campaign where players face off against waves of alien enemies on new and classic Battle Grids. The game's controls have been optimized for Nintendo systems, allowing gamers to use the Wiimote-Nunchuk controller combo or DS touch screen to execute hotshot moves. Players will also be able to do battle via hot seat, co-op, simultaneous and versus in multiplayer mode. Those that own both the DS and Wii systems can link the game together using Wi-Fi to unlock bonus content. Players can also post their high scores on the Wii's online leader board. No specific release date has been given for Geometry Wars: Galaxies yet, but it'll reportedly be out in the fall. We'll keep you guys posted. |

Well it's certainly not a sequel, but for Nintendo fans looking to have a taste of Bizarre Creations' Geometry Wars, it's definitely good news. IGN reports that Geometry Wars will be seeing Nintendo DS and Wii iterations in the near future and will be called Geometry Wars: Galaxies.According to their report, the latest issue of "Nintendo Power" first revealed the new game to the public. Instead of being a straight-out port, the game will be expanded, having "extensive single-player and multiplayer modes. In addition, the Wii and DS versions will have unique features related to their gameplay nuances, such as touch screen control and motion-sensing. As an added bonus to Nintendo owners, the original Retro Evolved title will be included in the package as well. Don't that make the wait even sweeter? Kuju Entertainment, the makers of Battalion Wars, will be taking care of development for the game. In the meantime, be patient. The game will be coming out in the fall, and we'll get you more info as it comes. |
