One of the many enjoyable nods to franchise history in Final Fantasy XII is the presence of airships. In stark contrast to previous incarnations of FF, what's enjoyable about the said iteration is that your party isn't the sole group of people benefiting from the presence of the said mode of transportation.

In Ivalice, almost anyone who can afford it has airships. The most feared, of course, are the ones made by (guess who) Cidolfus, er, Cid, for the Archadian army. Airships police the skies and ensure military dominance of certain regions. If you don't want to get shot down by the cannons of the Shiva, the Ifrit, or the Alexander - stay on foot, be good boys and girls, and always remember that they're way up there looking down on you.

In Ivalice, instead of becoming the stole "in-world excuse" that the game developers have of giving the players the means to quickly backtrack across the many areas of the game world – which is what all the airships in the past FFs were, really – the "in-world" existence of airships was the excuse for you to travel on foot across a certain area, in a certain amount of time.

Well, now that the world's peaceful again, and now that Vaan's graduated to becoming a Sky Pirate, Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is set to return the concept of the airship to what it used to be – a tool that helps increase the illusion of player freedom.

The clip below contains several teasers on how airships are supposed to affect gameplay. Enjoy!

Look, Laaaaavaaaaaaa.... This reminds us of the floating continent in Chrono Trigger

What do we know about the game so far? Storyline-wise we know that the game picks up from where FFXII ends, and will feature Vaan (now with his very own airship), Panelo, and the legendary floating continent Puruvama. What about gameplay? Well, other than that odd trailer floating around in YouTube, and that Dagenki DS Style interview with the developers of the game that reveals that it would feature staple summons and a DS version of the Gambit system, not much gameplay-wise.

Combat! Join our merry gang of sprites!

Well, these new images we found at Famitsu might give you guys an idea of how gameplay should feel like. So what can we discern from these images? Well, in-game graphics feel a lot like Chrono Trigger (especially in the second image from the left), only a bit smoother.

Moreover, combat looks a bit disorganized. While we know that Gambits are implemented, we're not entirely sure if the 'free-motion' feature of FFXII is in the DS game. Well, given that huge mess in that combat screenshot, 'free-motion' is a possibility, and if that Dagenki interview is to be believed, then combat should have healthy doses of stylus use. It could either have a max of four people in a party, or it may still be three plus one guest.

Well, we can't really say anything more conclusive, given this one screen, but don't worry, we'll keep you guys updated when more word leaks!

DS at the TGS

Heroes of ManaSeiken Densetsu fans now have a lot to look forward to as another title from the Mana universe makes its way to the DS. Heroes of Mana for the Nintendo DS is a project that Square Enix is currently working on, alongside the development studio Brownie Brown. The game trailer has been shown over at the Square Enix booth at the recent Tokyo Game Show.

Featuring the "intelligent and diplomatic youth from Pedan" Roger, our main character is known to pilot a military airship that can be used to deploy monsters, which you yourself can create by collecting the necessary ingredients. However, conflicts arise whenever you encounter someone else who is also collecting the same materials for their own menagerie. As far as the trailer goes, the game also possesses a moving score which  we're looking forward to hearing more of. However, there is still no word regarding this game's release date.

Falling into the RTSRPG genre that other titles such as Disgaea and Makai Kingdom belong to, this installment to the Seiken Densetsu series promises to be yet another addictive treat.

Heroes of Mana

The first details on Heroes of Mana have been revealed. The main character's name will be Roger who is described as an intelligent and diplomatic youth from Pedan, a land in the world in Heroes of Mana. Roger is the pilot of a military airship which can be used to send out monsters. Collecting certain materials allow you to create monsters. Your enemies in the game are collecting these materials and making their own monsters which of course leads to the inevitable conflicts you'll find in the game.

Heroes of Mana seems to be going the "RTSRPG" route which seems to be an evolution from the "SPRGs" that evolved from the "RPGs". Interesting how genres are starting to blend together now, isn't it?

Before the official Japan-release of Final Fantasy III on August 24 (which also happens to be the same date when the International Astronomical Union will vote on the 12-Planet structure!), we're hooking you up with something special today! Now, we here at QJ know just how much you guys are all too eager to see more trailers for this game! And so, without further ado... Click!

Oh, yes! The world map! And the clips in the video don't just show you the terrain! No, no, no... The highlights of the video are the modes of travel you can acquire and choose from during the course of the game!

Aside from walking around to get from Point A to Point B, you got some of your more traditional ways to travel. You got your rowboats, and airships, and chocobos, oh my! You got sailships, and zeppelins and, oh oh oh!, a submarine that transforms into a jet! One minute, you're torpedo-ing along underwater with fishies, the next thing you know, you're up in the clouds with the birdies! Neat!
