DS 1seg TV tuner - Image 1The Nintendo DS 1seg TV tuner in Japan caused quite a ruckus over demand. Online order placement for the DS/DSLite attachment were opened a few weeks back without any announcement whatsoever, but still, traffic flooded in.

Meanwhile, a recent survey conducted reveals that only 18% of the DS population want the TV tuner... But considering the sheer size of the DS population itself, the "only 18%" goes a loooong way indeed!

Nintendo DS 1seg TV tuner - Image 1

Not to be outdone by the Sony PlayStation Portable, the Nintendo DS handheld video game console is also getting its own 1seg TV tuner. In case you haven't heard of it, 1seg is a Japan-only mobile terrestrial digital audio/video and data broadcasting service. It's also available for mobile phones and the aforementioned PSP.

The Nintendo DS 1seg tuner gives the handheld a more old-school feel than the PSP's more compact attachment. The tuner plugs into the DS's cartridge slot and rocks a pair of rabbit-ear antennae. Video shows up on the top screen while the touch screen acts like a remote control.

The Nintendo DS 1seg tuner will launch in Japan on November 20. The suggested retail price for this accessory is 6,800 yen (about US$ 60).

Software Sales chart by Famitsu - Image 1With the release of Sony PSP Slim & Lite accompanied by Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+, Sony's handheld dominated Japan's video game hardware sales this September. Numbers show 448,000 Slims blasted off the shelves, adding up to a record-setting total of 529,000 PSP units sold for the month.

The last time Sony was on top date back to February 2006 when the Nintendo DS had a shortage in supply, making it a 19-month interval before the PSP took the lead once more. Nintendo's handheld still sold 391,752 even with the Slim craze, but the Wii sold considerably less at 168,220.

Aside from the hot PSP Slim & Lite, sales skyrocketed thanks to a couple of big PSP titles. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII from Square Enix sold 663,820 copies, while Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+ contributed 129,873 copies. Famitsu gave credit to extra peripherals for making the PSP more appealing, saying "many retailers have reported sellouts of PSP peripherals, like the One-Seg terrestrial digital TV tuner and PSP to TV AV cables."

The Sony PlayStation 2 proved it's still kicking after selling 69,400 units this September. Sony's next-gen console, the PlayStation 3, followed close behind at 66,444 sold. Microsoft's Xbox 360 only got 13,242 units off, but Halo 3 put up a fight and sold 61,143 copies to take the 18th spot of the top 20 software sales chart.

On a side note, Wii Sports has broken the 2 million mark and became the first ever title to do so on the Wii. Other Nintendo titles remain strong, with top 20 mainstays Mario Party 8, Wii Play, Mario Kart DS, and others still on the list. You'll find how many copies they sold on the list above.

One-Seg

It's supposed to be included in the Nintendo DS along with the browser. The browser has taken quite a lot of news, but what of this other "feature"? Besides the features covered in this previous report what else can DS' One-Seg TV tuner do? It's more than just TV in your DS. Imagine a 16:9 aspect ratio screen and CD-quality sound, watching two to three programs on one channel, joining interactive quizzes and questionnaires, reading subtitles/more info/speech speed alterations all in your Nintendo DS. Jaw-dropping, we know.

One-Seg aims to be the new terrestrial digital broadcast of the future of Japan. All TV broadcasts in Japan will be One-Seg by 2011. Currently there are already a lot of new devices using this technology. Notables are the Toshiba Gigabeat V30T, and the most new-gen mobile phones in Japan. In a few years people will be wondering how we lived without One-Seg like we're wondering now how people used to communicate with each other without mobile phones.

However, we reiterate that it's the future of JAPAN. Meaning, we are stuck in the 21st Century, folks. However, Europe may be able to get some One-Seg loving as their Digital Multimedia Broadcasting has digital data terrestrial broadcasting. Let's hope the world follows the trend.
