Menu v1.1, a homebrew menu app from Spinal - Image 1

Spinal is back withs a new homebrew application for those of you who are looking to organize the homebrew on your Nintendo DS: Menu v1.1 While the app name is a little straightforward, people can't deny the usefulness of this simple yet efficient homebrew from the award winning developer.

After his success with the developer's DiagnoSE homebrew app, Spinal has continued with Menu v1.1. This little application is based on Chishm's dldi loader and displays your list of homebrew apps on a simple side-scrolling menu. What makes this menu unique is that this is the first time that Chism's loader was built into a PAlib project.

While the menu still has a few graphical bugs, Spinal says that he will be continually updating this project and cleaning it up in future versions that he will be releasing.

Anyway, here's a list of changes since menu v1.0:
  • Background images are now changable, just place top.gif and bottom.gif in /menu_skin/
  • B pressed to exit a folder
  • Day name is now correct
  • Up/Down to skip the folder list (moves menu to where the files start)
For those of you interested in getting this easy-to-use homebrew menu, go ahead and click on the download link below. Included in the archive that includes the latest version is a copy of v1.0, just in case you want to take a look at the exact changes between the two.

DiagNoSe - Image 1Spinal's ever-useful DS diagnostic tool, DiagnoSe, has now been updated with new features such as SRAM testing, battery monitor and even a temperature monitor. In case you haven't tried out the previous version of the application (which can be found here), the homebrew app DiagnoSe is a great tool for checking if there's anything on your Nintendo DS that isn't functioning, such as buttons, touchscreen, stylus, and Wi-Fi, among others.

If you run homebrew applications or games on your DS, don't tarry and pick up this updated application, which has been lauded as one of the best stuck pixel fixer available for the Nintendo DS. Check out the full list of functions the DiagnoSe can now...well, diagnose:
  • Direction Pad and buttons
  • Touch screen accuracy
  • Wifi settings
  • Microphone
  • Speakers
  • Screen lights
  • Motion card/pak (sold separately)
  • Rumble pak (sold separately)
  • DLDI FAT
  • SRAM
  • Boot GBA game
  • Fix stuck pixels
  • Reset to card menu (supported cards only)
  • Power off DS
  • Set screen brightness (DS Lite only, not saved in firmware)
  • Battery monitor
  • Temperature monitor
  • GBA screen select (not saved in firmware)
Pretty useful, eh? You can download the application below if you find it nifty. Enjoy!

DiagnoSe homebrew app from Spinal - Image 1Spinal, who won this year's NeoFlash Spring coding competition for his Sensitive DS homebrew game, has released the first version of his homebrew app, DiagnoSe. As implied by the name of the homebrew, it allows you to diagnose your DS system on its many functions. The cool thing about it is that the interface actually mimics that of the Wii menu channels.

With your stylus, you can click on each "DS Channel" to test your DS hardware. Now although there isn't any readme, the application works quite simply. If you can't tell from the icon of each DS Channel, here's the list functions from top left to bottom right and what they specifically do:
  • Test Buttons
  • Test Stylus
  • Test Wifi
  • Boot GBA
  • Test Microphone
  • Test Speakers
  • Fix stuck pixels
  • Test screen lights
  • Test motion card/pak/mk6 motion
  • Test rumble pak
  • Test DLDI FAT
  • Credits
Very useful app, especially those pixel-fixing and microphone-testing features. It suddenly makes me wonder why Nintendo never incorporated these features in the DS menu to begin with. Yeah, you can calibrate your stylus on the menu, but thanks to this homebrew, you can do a lot more than that. By the by. Those two blue buttons at the bottom allow you to go back to the main menu and turn off your system.

NDSSpinal just released some details on his homebrew game, Sensitive DS. What's it about? Well, basically you need to get to the exit by removing all yellow and orange blocks. You can only pass over the orange blocks once, but twice on the yellow blocks. There are also grey blocks around, which you could use anytime you want.

The D-pad is used to move the disk, while B is used to teleport. Spinal says the said project was rushed, so as of now there are only 13 levels and poor graphics. Sound/music is lacking in the game as well.

However, we're sure this guy will release more updates for this cool homebrew game so you might watch out for that. For more NDS news and updates, just stay tuned here in QJ, ayt?
