iDeaS screenshot - Image 1Homebrew developer Lino, developer of the Nintendo DS emulator iDeaS for the PC, just released the latest version of this nifty Windows application. Now past its beta stage, iDeaS version 1.0.1.9 fixed a few bugs, added a plugin, and tossed in some improvements for the emulator.

As a recap for those who missed iDeaS the first time it came out, it's an app for the PC that can emulate the Nintendo DS with an R4DS card attached. Wi-Fi is only partly emulated, and there are still other issues most users would point out, but it should still be enough to play many DS games on your PC.

The latest release makes Nintendo DS emulation a lot more convenient. Here's the changelog:
  • Added support for Input Plugin.
  • Added DirectInput Plugin.
  • Added MultiSample 4x and 2x support.
  • Fixed bug in Cheats Support.
  • Fixed bug in SaveState Support.
  • Fixed bug in Backup files Support.
For more details on what iDeaS v1.0.1.9 can do, and other info on how to make the app work, don't forget to check out the Readme file that comes with the download.

NeonDS - Image 1There seem to be some new surprises in store for the Nintendo DS Emulator known as NeonDS. It seems the author has released NeonDS v0.1.1 for people to try out, though it's still incomplete.

For those who haven't heard of it, NeonDS is a work-in-progress Nintendo DS emulator for Windows. NeonDS currently has no sound enabled because the author is busy focusing on 3D support first, but we do hope that sound support happens eventually.

There's a reason behind this release though. "In the next two weeks I'll be busying moving my home to another city," he writes on his website. "I'll have no time working on this emulator. So, here I release a version with incomplete 3D display engine support. Although the 3D support is not complete yet, there are already some games playable."

Here's the current changelog for v0.1.1. Enjoy the emulator!
  • 3D display engine (incomplete yet)
  • Replace D3D with OpenGL for display rendering
  • Support 2x display zooming
  • Fix some DMA bugs

Nintendo DS emulated on the PSP - Image 1We're already driving into the weekend, expecting to hit the usual slowdown on updates, however, recent developments in the QJ forums (thanks for the tip, Glynnder!) have made us think that this is probably one of the homebrew community's most intense weeks in a long time. The OE source code, Team Wildcard's 3.40 LE CFW, Dark AleX actively talking to Sony, and now... a Nintendo DS Emulator on the PSP.

For all intents and purposes though, and right off the bat, we'd have to say that we can't host the download. One of the main reasons is that the emulator taps into the BIOS - thus leading to its illegality - and the second reason being its infantile stage. We hear the emulator isn't working all that perfect; running games ends up in lock ups and glitches.

So right now, we'd just have to report about its existence, and for the sake of discussion, talk about the implications. One of the biggest hurdles here, of course, is that, how would a DS emulator work without the DS' biggest features: the touchscreen? The experience of getting to play the real Nintendo DS will be watered down in an emulated Nintendo DS on the PSP, but see, isn't that what emulators are defined as?

We know you have a lot of questions, proclamations, and out bursts of joy. So we'll leave you with two options: 1) you may comment below, or 2) proceed to the forum thread for an in-depth discussion. However. Please bear in mind that we will not tolerate any links, information, or other details on where or how to get ROMs and illegal files.

Many thanks to Glynnder for sending in the tip!

GoodNDSFrom "goodnds" (contact via MSN Messenger) comes GoodNDS v0.0.3. This is a "new" Nintendo DS emulator for the PC (which can be a useful thing for homebrew developers). It is actually an update of DeSmuME, and the developer changed the name of DeSmuME to GoodNDS, changed the icon, and translated some of the words to English. The project now aims to add better 2D and 3D graphics and also aims to get sound working.

This is from the GoodNDS FAQ:
  • When is the next release? When we fix some graphics errors in the emulator.
  • Will it have WiFi? WiFi will probably be the last thing we add.
  • How come in GoodNDS v0.0.3, I can't load my game's save state? Well its a little weird because you have to use the same GoodNDS executable that you used to save it with.
  • Why does the emulator say error and freezes on me when im pressing a buttion? Its because you can only press the buttions that are set up for it or it freezes.
  • How come I only see a black screen? Ether you pressed a wrong buttion or the emulator doesent support that game.
  • Does GoodNDS have 3D graphics? It does. But not very good 3D graphics right now.
If you care to try it out, please let us know what you think about it.
