Looking for more excitement out of your Nintendo DS and mobile phone? EA Mobile in cooperation with John Carmack and Fountainhead Entertainment has something big coming your way. Orcs & Elves is an upcoming RPG-adventure hybrid for Nintendo's popular handheld and mobile handsets and it's looking very good for a video game of the said platforms.

Want proof? We've got hold of this nice little video of Electronic Arts' game showing us a peek of things to come in Orcs & Elves for the Nintendo DS. This game is based on the Doom RPG engine developed by id Software and it looks like Orcs & Elves is putting the tried-and-true system to good use. Have a look:

A tentative release date is yet to be announced as far as the Nintendo DS version is concerned, but things are looking pretty smooth with Fountainhead and EA Mobile's production efforts. We'll give you more updates on Orcs & Elves when new word is forthcoming.

orcs and elves by id software for the DS - Image 1Not content in simply developing Orcs and Elves for the Nintendo DS only, Fountainhead Entertainment's CEO and former business development director for id Software Katherine Anna Kang said that John Carmack is also planning to release the game on the Nintendo Wii.

Aside from their plan of carrying over old-school dungeon crawling adventure over to the Wii, Kang gave a demonstration on how the game will look like on the DS. While the environments will be rendered in 3D, the monsters players will encounter are rendered in 2D sprites.

There's a good reason for that: there will be times that there's too many monsters trying to charge at the player at the same time, and having them all rendered in 3D may be a bit problematic for the DS.

The menu interface on the touch screen is also interesting in its own right: at first glance, the image on the touch screen looks like just a background illustration, but it's actually the menu interface, drawn in such a way that it looks like the in-game main character is looking down at his feet and staring at the items strapped to his body. There's the sword, the map, the jars of ale, etc.

Orcs and Elves for the DS also has a nice bargaining system with the dragon. Be careful when trying to haggle prices with the dragon; do be mindful of her mood meter and bargain for a lower price when her mood is better. If you can't wait for a good time, you can try to appease the dragon by giving her sheep for food, or other things.

Certainly a nice addition to the DS library of games, and we couldn't wait to see how this game will turn out on the Wii.

John Carmack says Quake Arena to be released on the DS - Image 1John Carmack has gained the respect of the gaming community through his endeavors. Popularly known as the co-founder of id software and the lead programmer of the FPS games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, Carmack has been making waves on every system he's developed for. Now he's announced that Quake Arena will be heading to the Nintendo DS.

During his keynote speech at this year's Quake Con he gave out some details about the said project, and it was regarding the control scheme of the game. He said that he is leaning towards more traditional methods meaning it would be more like Doom and less like Metroid Prime Hunters.

This blogger has found that the Metroid Prime Hunters control scheme was very intuitive provided you used a thumb strap/finger stylus. However, it got kind of messy when you had to keep employing a regular stylus to access the touch screen. This move to a simpler but more limited control scheme may actually work considering the fast and furious action that Quake Arena is known for. However, it might be difficult for players to track opponents on multi-tiered levels if the developers choose to go the route of no auto-aiming.

id SoftwareThe first-person, turn-based fantasy RPG Orcs and Elves might be making its way to DS handhelds soon. In an interview with Wired, lead programmer and id Software founder John Carmack revealed that they are "hoping" to develop a DS version of the mobile phone game.

id Software has kept Nintendo at arm's length for quite a few console generations now. "We've never had a close, good relationship with Nintendo from like way back, when we had some back [bad?] experiences really early on..," said Carmack, citing some "... Wolfenstein stuff..." as a reason along with "the whole Nickelodeon censor arrangement with Nintendo."

Carmack said that if plans push through, it would be their "first real direct entry back into the Nintendo world." Currently, there are a few homebrew ports of Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake for the DS.
