GP2X F-200 - Image 1If you haven't heard of the handheld gaming platform called the GP2X, we'll tell you a bit about it. The GP2X is a Linux-based machine that allows you to play games with hardware quality coming close to the Nintendo DS. It recently released a new version called the F-200 and it has a touch-screen function much like its popular counterpart.

There are very few commercial developers for this gadget but it does have a strong backing from a homebrew community that creates emulators and small games frequently. With the new touch screen, can a DS emulator finally be created?

This is something certainly worth monitoring as it could be big in the alternative gaming scene. We'll keep you posted for more updates so keep it right here.

Dstroy for the DS - Image 1The ongoing NeoFlash Summer Coding Competition 2007 has just  received a new game entry courtesy of developer Naroin. The homebrew is titled Dstroy, a Bomberman-style game that's been ported to the PC, GP2x, and DS. And just like Bomberman, the goal in Dstroy is for you to blast away the in-game monsters in the game's 48 levels. Dstroy was originally built for DOS by FBS in 1995.

Dstroy is further expected to undergo more changes in the near future - expect to see these fixes in later builds:
  • Sound working on NDS
  • A network mode, up to 8 (or more) players
  • Multilanguage version (in French only for the moment)
  • Get the joysticks work well on PC
  • High definition version (800*600) ; easy switching between the two versions
  • Correct the bugs. Ah no, there's not one ;)
  • Update website with all up-to-date versions!
Game controls and usage instructions are available in the download link. Stick around in case we pick up news of an update, or other homebrew making it to the NeoFlash Summer Coding Contest!

Duke3DS - Image 1 Duke3DS - Image 2 Duke3DS - Image 3

Another entrant into the NeoFlash Spring Coding Competition, GPF's Duke3Ds is a port of Duke Nukem 3D port from GP2X. Amazing how the ports come so much sooner than Duke Nukem Forever, which is still taking forever and a day to make.

There's some technical stuff you need to consider closely though, so listen up. Here's what GPF mentioned on his post to NeoFlash:

DLDI patch .nds and copy it and defs.con, game.con, user.con, duke3d.grp and supplied duke3d.cfg to /duke3d directory of card. Might be case sensitive with Uppercase. It still needs sound added and network support, but is playable with your own provided shareware .grp or full version .grp file.

As for the directions, we've got them below. Feel free to check out the rest of the happening on it direct from GPF's site, which we'll be using as a primary source. Enjoy!

Directions:
  • d-pad - move Duke
  • a - fire
  • b - jump
  • x - look up
  • y - look down
  • left trigger - strafe left
  • right trigger - strafe right
  • select - use item
  • start - select
  • touchscreen - look around, change weapon
