ScummVM, a program which runs old-school point-and-click adventure games - Image 1Whoever said DOS was dead, obviously isn't a firm believer in the power of emulation. Old school gamers will definitely find the ScummVM program a gem for reliving the good ol' days of point-and-click adventure gaming.

The team from ScummVM has released three new games from the classic horror RPG developer Horror Soft. For more information, check out the full article!

Woopsi v0.24, a GUI homebrew system for the DS developed by Ant512 - Image 1Ant512, a homebrew developer specializing in Nintendo DS applications is trying to break the groundwork for other homebrew coders with the Woopsi homebrew, which aims to create a simple windowing system that programmers can use for their own applications.

Written in C++, Woopsi v0.24 is loosely based on the Commodore Amiga's "Intuition" windowing system. The GUI itself works everything in a "screen" environment, and the look and feel of the system intentionally resembles the old Amiga System.

DS Homebrew: Lemmings DS v7.01 Full - Image 1

Lemmings DS by Team LemProject is an open source port of the original Lemmings on the Amiga console. The game features all 220 levels from both the original Amiga Lemmings and Oh-No! More Lemmings.

This DS homebrew features quite a few things that make life easier for those who want to run it, such as DLDI support. In addition to that, fans of the series will also appreciate the automatic progress saving and the map editor.

The only major change in this version is a bug fix for Tactics. No other details were given so we just have to assume that said problem's been fixed. Be sure to read the included text file after decompressing the file to get more details on how to get the program up and running on your DS. Keep checking back here for more homebrew games for the Nintendo DS.

Symphonic Game Music Concert 2007 coming to Leipzig - Image 1Dedicating to the avid gamers' world of game music devotion, the GCDC 2007 to start this coming August will also be seeing a live performance by the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague on popular game soundtracks from Starcraft, Final Fantasy IX, Ragnarok 2, Stranglehold, Metal Gear Solid 2: Snake Eater, Secret of Mana and The Abbey Turrican 2.

Conducted by Andy Brick, the orchestra will also perform popular classics in medley form in salute to the Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga as pioneering game platforms for the game industry, as stated by an official press release.

The performance will be held at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig on August 22, 8 p.m. and won't be an official part of the GCDC 2007 opening ceremony. Also to appear at the concert is Japanese star opera singer Izumi Masuda, singer Conny Kollet from Germany fame, and Konami-sponsored percussionist Rony Barrak.

Kollet is popular for her performances at the Symphonic Game Music Concert, of which this concert will be the fifth of the series, although many will know her for her rendering of the title song for SpellForce: The Breath of Winter.

Rony Barrak will be performing his version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Snake Eater together with the FILMharmonic Orchestra. Masuda, despite being an opera singer, is more inclined to pop-opera pieces, and could be identified as the same one who rendered the song "Distant Worlds" from Final Fantasy at the concert "VOICES: music from Final Fantasy." Tickets are already being sold as of this moment.

LemmingsDSOne of the most classic titles to ever come out onto the gaming industry is Lemmings. They're all over the place: from PC to PS, Xbox Live, and most recently even the PlayStation Network. Much to say, they're breeding like rabbits - in a sense.

These little critters have now been transported homebrew-style onto your DS, and you've got the Lem Project to thank. The team just released their LemmingsDS v3, and their newest version is crawling with the green-haired dudes. It's an open-source port of the Amiga-version Lemmings game engine.

If you've played a single Lemmings game in your life, you probably don't need any instructions to simply jump in and get on with the point-and-clicking. But for those few first-timers (as we're sure there probably still are), you might want to take a look at more developer notes in the "Read" link below.

For those who want to go advanced and create their own custom levels, the said "Read" link also contains all the important info you need to start churning out your Lemming wonderlands.

Micro Machines v4 DS packshotCodemasters and Supersonic Software recently announced that Micro Machines v4 (PC, PSP) for the DS has just shipped to retail stores all over the globe.

Having previously appeared on various consoles such as Amiga, Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Boy and PS2, the Micro Machines franchise has expanded to jump to the Xbox, PSP, PC, and DS as well, with v4, the eighth title off the game series.

So what's in store for DS users specifically? Aside from 750 vehicles, more than 25 tracks, and a track editor, Micro Machines v4 for the DS also has touch screen controls and multiplayer via Wi-Fi.

The PC and PSP versions have been out in the market since June this year, and now DS users can join in on the racing fun as well, while Xbox owners in Europe would have to wait a bit more before they can get their hands on the game.

Whoa! Now how's that for retro? This homebrew takes me back - with a flashback - figuratively and literally. For the sentimental gamers out there, some of you guys might want to have a little trip down the memory lane and check this out.

Using the code from Gregory Montoir's earlier REminiscence engine rewrite, Sektor has ported an NDS-version of Flashback and now it's on v0.23.
FlashBackDS
Here's the changelog for FlashbackDS v0.23:
  • Added a version with GBA_NDS_FAT from picodriveDS 0.1.6. Use this on MMD, EZ4 and SC miniSD. Untested.
  • Support for Italian language files.
  • Updated libcartreset to 0.72 (fixes return to menu on SC Lite). Return to menu only works on libfat version.
  • Level select. You can now scroll through level codes on the password screen. Up/down for skill, left/right for level.
Some instructions:
  • You will need the data files from the PC DOS version of the game. Copy the Flashback files to X:dataflashbackdata , replace X: with the drive letter of your DS media device.
  • To hear music, you need the mod.* files from the Amiga version. They should be named like mod.flashback-introb, without a .mod extension.
  • It should work on M3CF (tested), GBAMP and Supercard. Backup anything important before using any homebrew that writes to your media device. I haven't had any file corruption but I haven't tested every device and backups are always a good idea.
Sektor says that he plans to improve the sound quality and music playback, as well as speed up the cut scenes. There's the scaling issue still needing to be address, and he's already planning to tweak that soon, among a lot of other things.

Game development for The Settlers is looking very concrete as Ubisoft releases a number of screenshots from their real-time strategy game. With the screens is the official logo the game will carry. It was proposed at first to be called The Settlers V but it seems that the Roman numeral was dropped for the DS release.

First to appear for PC and Commodore Amiga, The Settlers now comes in with a free mode gameplay option that allows quick matches against the computer.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft plans to release the game in the last quarter of 2006 only in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
