ScummVM DS - Image 1ScummVM porter agentq has released a new ScummVM DS build that supports external RAM packs, letting users play Lucas Arts' classic SCUMM games Full Throttle and The Dig on their Nintendo handhelds. Full Throttle reportedly runs perfectly, with minimal slowdowns. The Dig, on the other hand, has some slowdown and is probably not completable due to a crash that occurs in one particular room.

ScummVM - Image 1DS homebrew developer Agentq has announced that he is releasing ScummVM DS v0.10.0a for general use. This app, for those wondering, is an emulator that enables users to play games that use LucasArt's famed Scumm engine.

This latest version (v0.10.0a) of the emulator will make use of several fixes Agentq picked up thanks to the previous beta release:
  • New engines supported: AGI, CINE, and SAGA.

  • Option to show the mouse cursor
  • Word completion on keyboard for AGI games
  • Plenty of optimisations
  • Numerous bug fixes
ScummVM's DS version in particular also carries support for games like the later Goblins series, Future Wars, and Sierra AGI games, along with overall speed boosts. That's the lowdown on this release - guys interested in reading the full instructions are advised to check out the readme included the file bundle, available for download here.

ScummVM DS v0.10.0 Beta1 now out for public testing - Image 1If you're a fan of old point and click adventure games, then you've probably heard of ScummVM. In the odd case that you haven't, it's an emulator for your DS that allows you to play games using the LucasArts' famed Scumm engine.

It looks like agentq (Neil Millstone) and the rest of the ScummVM team have recently rolled out the Beta 1 version of ScummVM DS v0.10.0. So early adopters may want to help them out by testing it and submitting bug reports to the developers.

It was announced by agentq that there are no full instructions for this release since it's still on beta, though they did come up with the changes that were implemented along with the games supported by the latest build. Here are the changes:

QuakeDS - Image 1Among the more lucrative homebrew gaming projects we've been picking up on for the DS scene, one that's been exceptionally exciting to watch is Simon Hall's upcoming QuakeDS game. Aside from the recent pre-release we hosted earlier, the author announced a new pre-release version for Quake DS's WiFi build, which now carries support for an on-screen keyboard keyboard. Here's a gist of what this new feature does:

QuakeDS pre2a has a built-in on-screen keyboard, to allow you to press more buttons than there are physical buttons on the DS. It can be overlaid on the subscreen by binding a button to the 'osk' command. To bind the button, either go to the key configurations menu and set up 'on screen keyb' (about half way down) or just add a line like bind "PAD A" "osk" to your config.cfg file. Once you've bound the button, just press it to see and use the keyboard.

That's just the rough on this latest game update, which was helped along by AgentQ's ScummVM Ds project. Given that much work (and complicated coding) went into building this new feature in - not to mention in the absence of a README - we strongly advise curious users to visit Simon Hall's site (via source link) for the long list of details. Enjoy the download!
