ScummVM - Image 1DS homebrew developer Agentq has announced that he is releasing ScummVM DS v0.10.0a for general use. This app, for those wondering, is an emulator that enables users to play games that use LucasArt's famed Scumm engine.

This latest version (v0.10.0a) of the emulator will make use of several fixes Agentq picked up thanks to the previous beta release:
  • New engines supported: AGI, CINE, and SAGA.

  • Option to show the mouse cursor
  • Word completion on keyboard for AGI games
  • Plenty of optimisations
  • Numerous bug fixes
ScummVM's DS version in particular also carries support for games like the later Goblins series, Future Wars, and Sierra AGI games, along with overall speed boosts. That's the lowdown on this release - guys interested in reading the full instructions are advised to check out the readme included the file bundle, available for download here.

ScummVM DS v0.10.0 Beta1 now out for public testing - Image 1If you're a fan of old point and click adventure games, then you've probably heard of ScummVM. In the odd case that you haven't, it's an emulator for your DS that allows you to play games using the LucasArts' famed Scumm engine.

It looks like agentq (Neil Millstone) and the rest of the ScummVM team have recently rolled out the Beta 1 version of ScummVM DS v0.10.0. So early adopters may want to help them out by testing it and submitting bug reports to the developers.

It was announced by agentq that there are no full instructions for this release since it's still on beta, though they did come up with the changes that were implemented along with the games supported by the latest build. Here are the changes:

QuakeDS - Image 1Among the more lucrative homebrew gaming projects we've been picking up on for the DS scene, one that's been exceptionally exciting to watch is Simon Hall's upcoming QuakeDS game. Aside from the recent pre-release we hosted earlier, the author announced a new pre-release version for Quake DS's WiFi build, which now carries support for an on-screen keyboard keyboard. Here's a gist of what this new feature does:

QuakeDS pre2a has a built-in on-screen keyboard, to allow you to press more buttons than there are physical buttons on the DS. It can be overlaid on the subscreen by binding a button to the 'osk' command. To bind the button, either go to the key configurations menu and set up 'on screen keyb' (about half way down) or just add a line like bind "PAD A" "osk" to your config.cfg file. Once you've bound the button, just press it to see and use the keyboard.

That's just the rough on this latest game update, which was helped along by AgentQ's ScummVM Ds project. Given that much work (and complicated coding) went into building this new feature in - not to mention in the absence of a README - we strongly advise curious users to visit Simon Hall's site (via source link) for the long list of details. Enjoy the download!

Scumm VM v0.9.1a has left the Beta stage - Image 1ScummVM DS 0.9.1a has left the Beta stage, and its creators, agentq (Neil Millstone) and the rest of the ScummVM team, should be proud of their latest release. In the past, we covered ScummVM DS 0.9.1a Beta 2, 0.9.1a Beta 3, 0.9.1a Beta 4, and the last Beta version, Beta 6. Now in this newest version of ScummVM, they have added some more features and fixes that should make fans of legacy games happy.

Aside from the fixes that were mentioned in previous our coverage of the emulator, they have also repaired a few other things in this version. For starters, they fixed the graphics glitch which occurs with Scumm games that use a lot of scrolling sdasdas, long filename support, (Mac versions of Scumm games will now run) and the turning controls in the Indiana Jones games have all been fixed.

In addition, they have added new features to the emulator as well. Additional zooming options (100%, 200%, and Fit) are now available and CD audio tracks can now start from track one or two. Those hoping to play Lucasarts' Full Throttle, The Dig, or The Curse of Monkey Island are still out of luck though, because of certain RAM issues that the DS has. Humongous Entertainment games still aren't playable as well since the extra code required would eat up too much RAM.

A readme file is enclosed in the Zip file, along with instructions on how to install the emulator, as well as other important information such as compatibility issues and controls. Be sure to read it before trying to install the emulator.

ScummVM - Image 1agentq and the ScummVM team has unrolled yet another update to their homebrew emu for the DS, Scumm VM. For those not in the know, Scumm VM is an emulator that allows you to play Lucasarts' back catalog of point and click adventure games on modern computers.

So anyway, the emu is now on Beta 2, and the biggest addition to this one is the DLDI support. Meaning, the emu now supports DLDI drivers and you'll need to patch the zip file with a driver before you get to run it on your flash card reader.

Changelog:
  • Removed all card reader drivers
  • added DLDI interface
  • Fixed bug where the CD Audio wasn't looping
Clueless about the whole DLDI thing? Don't worry, the devs have provided step-by-step instructions on this in the readme_dldi file so make sure you check it out. And if this is your first time to use ScummVM, you'll also find detailed info in the readme, so make sure you do read it before you tinker with your handhelds.
