Videogame remakes have always been hit-or-miss. True, the core gameplay of the original may be evident, but oftentimes things get changed to the point that the end product is barely recognizable and alienates itself from its root material. Space Invaders Extreme is no different, being that it's the latest remake in a long line of remakes of the original 1978 classic. But is it different from all the other remakes out there? Some fans of Advance Wars tend to lean towards Dual Strike for its abundant Commanding Officer (CO) powers and unlockables, but after easily clocking in almost a hundred hours playing Days of Ruin's massive package which contains single player Campaign, multiplayer of up to four through wi-fi, and the Design Room, we made up our minds - Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is no lesser, if not the more refined instalment on the Nintendo DS.

If there ever was a game so sadistic, so merciless in its execution, so single-mindedly methodical in making a player's life difficult enough that the individual either breaks down and cries, or simply chucks his portable game system into a wall - Etrian Odyssey would be its older, tougher brother. The one that has the tattoos and eats broken glass sandwiches for lunch.

If you've played any of this generation's roleplaying games (or even last generation) and found them challenging, perhaps difficult - mayhap you could even say they were hard - then say hi to the game that you will look back on say, "At least it's not as hard as THAT GAME."

This is the review for Atlus' Etrian Odyssey, or more commonly referred to as You Can't Win, or OMG A DEER JUST KILLED MY ENTIRE PARTY BLARGHSLARGHSDF.

Sequels almost always never work for some reason. Maybe it's the gaping chasm that their predecessors made that they have to inevitably fill, or maybe something changed along the way that turns out for the worse, and lets down an expectant audience. Rarely does a sequel (and sequels after that) really manage to capture the magic of the first - but when that does happen, it's a cause for celebration.
