Gameboy Color square - Image 1It's always good to see old projects getting picked up again just when we thought they're completely forgotten by their respective homebrew developers. In this case, Nukti resumed working on Gameboy Color emulator Lameboy, after an almost year-long hiatus. More details and changelog in the full article.

DSBoy in action - Image 1 DSBoy in action - Image 2

More homebrew goodness coming right at you with the latest updated version of Brunni's Game Boy Color emulator for the Nintendo DS, DSBoy version 0.6 (or TestDS). As the name states, this one lets you play the games you loved on the color-blessed version of Nintendo's legendary handheld, the Game Boy - on your Nintendo DS. And this update fixes quite a few things from its last version, as well as improves all-around compatibility with the GBC's line-up of titles.

Let's take a look at DSBoy version 0.6's changelog (translated via an online language tool):

With the menu
  • Correction of the known bugs for Gargoye' S Quest
  • Greater compatibility
  • Speed acrue on certain plays up to 20%
Very nice indeed. And for a parting note, Player Advance forums poster omg adds that for those of us who like what Brunni's doing with DSBoy or TestDS, we should send our feedback to the coders. Certainly not  too much to ask, considering that it really helps a lot in improving the program.

DSboy v0.5 is a Nintendo DS homebrew application which emulates the Game Boy Color handheld - Image 1Here's another homebrew application that will give old school gamers on the Nintendo DS something to look back to. The DSBoy v0.5 is a Game Boy Color emulator made by homebrew developer Brunni on the Player Advance French website.

This nifty little application takes its roots from an application with the same name. The source code for the DSBoy was originally taken from former DS developer Etho and later then picked up by Mateom199.

We've provided a list of the changelog since it was picked up by Brunni. You will, of course, have to excuse the mangled English since it came from a French site and had to be run through an online translator.

23.09.2007: Version 0.4, current.
  • Improved thoroughly the speed of the CPU core thanks to the direct translation of the PC (to avoid to have to say for example yew addresses between 0x0000 and 0x2000 Romanian return [addresses] etc to each instruction). More various modifications in the structure of the core to accelerate. One can return to the menu of selection of ROMs with L+R but that does not go well (often that plants or slows down with the launching of the next play).
Version 0.3:
  • Great improvement speed (modif. CPU core, better management of the timers and addition of a system of events (timers, irq, lcdc) to make the loop principal as clean as possible). Addition of the original renderer of DSBoy, very slow, modified a little so that that resembles something this time You can activate it while pressing on R by charging the ROMANIAN.
Version 0.2:
  • Improvement on the level speed and renderer (emulation of the screen)

Game Boy Color - Image 1About two weeks ago, Nutki announced the release of Lameboy, a Game Boy Color Emulator for the Nintendo DS. And while the project was still far from polished, it was a very promising venture that carried some high hopes for the DS homebrew community. With that said, the author has just announced (via DS-Scene) the release of version 0.7 of this GBC emulator, which carries these latest changes:
  • Fixed: less interscreen video glitches
  • Fixed: correct flag bits locations, helps Zelda Oracle of Ages
  • Fixed: window size overflow, helps with menu in both Zelda Oracles
  • Added: 60fps emulation speed sync
  • Added: fast mode with L button
  • Added: cpu emulation optimizations, more games run fullspeed
Installation and usage details should be available in the file's accompanying readme. Be reminded that this release has been pre-patched to the R4DS card - those who own different cards will want to patch Lameboy v0.7 accordingly. Make sure to thank Nutki for the effort, and do enjoy the download.

Play with smurfs on your DS! - Image 1Created by Nutki over at the DS Scene forums, Lameboy is a Game Boy Color Emulator for the DS. It's still in its development stages, lacking sound and compatibility with specific games, but there seems to be enough potential for this GBC emulator to make a big splash in the near future.

There has been a lot of changes since it got released around a week ago, so we did a bit of digging to get you the full changelog so far:

0.6
  • fixed: 32k save (helps Pokemon S/G/Y, Dragon Warrior III)
  • added: supports roms larger than 2MB (only unzipped - .gbc)
  • fixed: directory browsing history
As it stands, it's worthwhile enough for a trial run, don't you think? The first post on the forums has the installation information as well as how to use it with roms. Make sure you let Nutki know if he's doing a good job or not, and give him some constructive advice if you happen to be a programmer, alright? Enjoy!

Screenshot - Image 1Mateom199 from gbadev has recently picked up an old project by a former DS developer, Etho. Etho originally developed a GBC emulator for the Nintendo DS but later dropped the project. DSBoy started as a clone of gnuboy (Gameboy emulator) and was migrated onto the Nintendo DS, however it is no where near where gnuboy's compatibility and features. After Etho dropped the project several months ago and announced a new one, we have been left in the dark with the emulator and its source.

Mateom199 peaked an interest in this project and decided that he would attempt to work on it. With this new release of the emulator a file browser has been added to browser for your rom files (we do not support piracy here at QJ, but there are a wide array of public roms available). There has also been support for libfat added and it now is capable of being compiled by DKP r20. For those looking to support or help out in this project, feel free to drop by gbadev and show your interest as Mateom199 is not too familiar with GB emulation to optimize it entirely.

Ethos says a GB/C Emulator is in the works and should be available for download soon.

Got some nice progress on my emulator, but when I started implementing GBC I realized I needed better optimization. Here are the screens before I totally overhaul my emulator. GB is playing at good speed and GBC at slow ass speed. lol, learning ARM assembler + registers is looking more appealing day by day.

Here are some screenshots:
