From Square Enix' arsenal of remakes comes Dragon Quest IV for the Nintendo DS, and here are screens to prove how an aged classic can be revitalized on the handheld. Compared to the DQIV remake on the PlayStation back in 2001, it's easy to say fans will be more than happy to have an epic adventure on the go.

As a faithful remake, it seems Square Enix is really pushing for that old school look. Character models, unlike in Final Fantasy III's full 3D reincarnation on the DS, still retain the anime-esque style. Environments, especially the interiors, have improved a notch and buildings look quite epic. Beautiful artwork is plastered onto the background during battle.

No thanks to rough translation, we can only figure out from Famitsu's Dragon Quest IV post that there'll still be plenty of dungeon crawling. You're still the hero who'll encounter interesting allies and enemies, then eventually save the world. Questing won't start until the game's November 22 release in Japan, so we'll leave you with the screens for now.

Dragon Quest IV - Image 1

Here's some very good news for those of us who just can't wait to get our hands on the first of three DS remakes of the Dragon Quest series, namely Dragon Quest IV - the official website has just been unveiled by Square Enix, giving the game a legitimate presence on the world wide web. And it's quite the sight to see indeed.

Unfortunately, it's all in Japanese, so those of us without the gift for the language may find themselves lost on the blocks upon blocks of incomprehensible hiragana and katakana. But that's not to say that the site itself isn't worth exploring, as there's a few nifty surprises we found while clicking through it.

First off, the website actually features in-game graphics of the map, buildings, and spritework - so if you're eager to see more of the game, it's definitely worth a gander. Clicking on the links and various sprites on the make shift you around the bird's eye view of the world that the website offers, and there's quite a few areas you'll be sliding off to.

And last but not the least, the bright blue morning sky actually cycles into day and night - just wait for a few moments and you'll see the sky turning brown, then read, then purple and finally night blue. It's something to see, really.

Definitely a great update - even though it's not actually game-related - about Square Enix's efforts to bring back life into the highly-cherished Dragon Quest titles. You can check out the site itself by clicking on the Read link below.

Those who've been keeping tabs on Square Enix' trifecta of revivals would find some of the shots familiar, but we reckon they're still be enjoyable to look at. The pages are packed with information for those who can recognize Japanese characters.

What we can figure is how Squeenix' sticking close to the roots of DQ IV. Environments still look exciting and green, populated with classic DQ folks that are now in 3D. Combat seems like it'll still be old school, having enemies on your screen while commands are right below them.

With Square Enix making the decision to school today's gaming generation on what gaming used to be by remaking not one, not two, but three Dragon Quest titles for the Nintendo DS - it's no mystery that gaming magazine Famitsu is all up in arms about it, as evident from the luxurious two-page treatment they've given the first of the three remakes, Dragon Quest IV. Here they are, for your viewing pleasure - bon apetit!

Looking at the scans, it seems that they've kept most of the game intact - that is, it's not a total remake in the sense of a complete overhaul just to make it "next-gen". Akira Toriyama's art, made famous by his work in the popular anime series Dragon Ball Z, is still present - making the game stand out in terms of visual impact and design, as well as cementing its identity as a Dragon Quest title.

The in-game screenshots tell us that the structures and scenery have all been given the 3D treatment, with the characters remaining delightfully 2D. We've seen this done with quite a few titles, with Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, and even Pokemon Diamond/ Pearl - and suffice to say it works just as well here. It makes the game fresh and easy to look at, as well as giving the title that unique edge of being faithful to its root material, while evolving for the next generation. In other words, the sweet spot of remake happy.

Dragon Quest IV is definitely looking good. Updates as we get them in the meantime enjoy the scans!
