Professor Layton and the Curious Village downloadable content already up - Image 1Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime announced earlier this month that the Nintendo DS will be getting downloadable content through its Wi-Fi service, a feature that will be prominent in Professor Layton and the Curious Village. He wasn't exaggerating when he singled out the game: not a day has gone by since its release and the game already has downloadable content available from the Wi-Fi service. More in the full article.

SvSIP, by samuelv - Image 1In case fellow DS owners there would like to get VoIP capability on their portable Ninty console,  we've got something coming in from developer samuelv. The coder has announced the release of SvSIP, an application that allows you to directly use your DS as a phone via its built-in microphone, speakers (or headphones), and WiFi connectivity.

samuelv further notes that you'll have to set up an Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) account, and another WiFI-based DS app (like Mario Kart DS) to configure your connections. With regards to compatibility, SvSIP has been tested on Superkey, SuperCard, and M3 Simply (all with a  1GB MicroSD card) - the last one had to be patched.

For those wondering, SvSIP is based on the pjsip development library used in building embedded/non-embedded VoIP applications.

On a last note, the app appears to be running properly (when properly configured), as was stated by testers over at the GBAtemp forums. The download is available here, although we strongly advise readers to visit samuelv's website for further usage instructions. Enjoy the download.

Download: SvSIP

Nintendo Wi-Fi - Image 1A keen poster over at NeoGAF noticed some Wi-Fi activity for two games that are known to be offline-only games: Nintendogs and Yoshi's Island.

The poster has reported about six Wi-Fi connections made for Nintendogs last Saturday, while Yoshi's Island clocked in with four Wi-Fi connections last Friday and Saturday. How can he tell? It has something to do with checking out the game code (found on the cart), and comparing it to the Wi-Fi chart in Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection site. Specific details on how to do it can be found in the Via link.

Nintendogs and Yoshi's Island on Wi-Fi? Certainly a very interesting prospect. Swap cute puppies over the Nintendo Wi-fi Connection! Interact with friends in minigames in a Yoshi's Island title! The possibilities are quite...shall we say, endless.

More updates as they come!

Mario Party DS has WiFi! - Image 1

There are never enough Wi-Fi games on the DS. That being said, a new tidbit from Daily Nintendo has got us quite excited,  as there seems to be another great addition to the growing list of games that's coming out with the Wi-Fi option enabled: Mario Party DS.

Daily Nintendo just posted a scan of the latest Nintendo's 2007 catalog, and occupying one full page is Mario Party DS. The thing that we noticed on the scan? The cute blue "Wi-Fi Connection" logo.

For Nintendo DS owners who still don't have a wireless internet connection or a Wi-Fi dongle, this may be the cue to buy one now. We'll let you know more as soon as we get more info. Until then, sit tight.

Buffalo to release Wi-Fi Gamer wireless device - Image 1Techies gather round, for Buffalo Technology has another plug-in wireless device aimed at Wi-Fi-capable consoles (and yes, that would mean you Sony and Nintendo button mashers) which they call the Wi-Fi Gamer. If their joint offering with Nintendo was a treat for Wii and DS gamers with XP rigs, this new device might tickle your fancy. We know you've got lost of love for your current Wi-Fi routers, but check this one out.

Not larger than a pack of playing cards, the Wi-Fi Gamer can work devoid of Windows computers - holding off the idea of port-hogging port on your PC. Instead the AirStation OneTouch Secure System (AOSS) gadget connects to an open port in your home or office LAN and runs its own wireless access point with the press of the "Connect" button.

And while Nintendo consoles have been working with AOSS for significant time now, even Sony has upped the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable (PSP) to AOSS compatibility levels with their recent firmware upgrades. In fact, Buffalo Technology has worked closely with Sony and Nintendo to ensure the systems feature AOSS push-button connectivity.

You can expect the Wi-Fi Gamer to hit US shores by August, carrying a price tag of US$ 49.99 to US$ 59.99 and sporting multiple connected device handling features. It's range is reportedly comparable to various other 802.11g network devices.

bleachers - Image 1We've all heard about the news on how the Nintendo DS innovated handheld gaming, and we've already witnessed such innovation. However, Nintendo plans to up the ante by making the DS become part of every gamer's life, beyond playing video games.

Introducing the Nintendo Fan Network, a locally-based Wi-Fi network installed in stadiums that will let DS owners order food and drinks from the comfort of their own seats (or bleachers), watch live television feed of the game, and even take tabs on player stats, scores, and trivia.

The Nintendo Fan Network's maiden launch in the Seattle Mariner's home games was met with little fanfare, not even announced in the Mariner's website. To make Nintendo DS owners aware of the application's existence, two download stations were set up in the main concourse of Safeco Field, and advertisements were inserted before games.

J.C. Smith, Nintendo corporate affairs manager, gave a demonstration on how the DS Interactive Fan Network will play a big role in enhancing stadium experience. Hotdogs and drinks were delivered ten minutes after he ordered them using his handheld, with the tip included in the order price. A live television feed that's not usually accessed within the stadium was made available through the network, which was useful for reviewing critical plays.

The program was priced as US$ 5 per game, or US$ 30 for 10 games. The price may have put off some people, but there were some people who liked the concept of being able to peek at game and player stats, and even being able to watch important plays they missed.

Smith is not worried about the slightly cool reception of the application. "It's been a work in progress," he said. He goes on to say that Nintendo is currently finding ways to use its wireless features, with the Interactive Fan Network turning out to be one of the more popular ones.

Once successful, Nintendo intends to expand the service to other stadiums.

Nintendo DS - Image 1Opera Software is coming out with a web browser for the Nintendo DS so that North American fans of the handheld can enjoy internet access through a Wi-Fi environment and access all their favorite websites.

Priced at US$ 29.99, the browser comes in a package that resembles an ordinary DS game. It comes in two variants made specifically for the original DS while the other one is for the more compact DS Lite.

Any of the two screens of the DS can be used. Better yet, users can make the two small screens work like one larger screen. According to Scott Hedrick, EVP Marketing for Opera Software, the browser should make the already popular DS platform even more enjoyable for its large install base.

"Opera is excited to work with Nintendo to bring the easy and accessible way to browse the Internet to DS lovers in North America," he says. "DS Browser makes it easy to check news, popular user generated content sites or comparison shop while in a Wi-Fi hotspot."
