I guess since just rehashing a new version of the gameboy wasn't getting many people to keep upgrading every year (duh) when they finally make a true update to their platform it's quite a success. However I am afraid this is only temporary.
These are some of the kiddies who are replacing their existing gameboys. I would be trembling If I was Nintendo. With gamers yearning for "cooler gadgets" (PSP and ipod for example) they might be dethrone sooner than they think. If it weren't for the cheap price and name branding (those japs love their pokemon) the DS would really be suffering right now but they made a smart move at not trying to compete directly. They aim at a different market (younger, female and N fanboy gamers). Unfortunately as it happens with all things that become mainstream you have to be cool or die trying (see Creative products or DS lite).
I see the DS outgunning the PSP for the next 1.5 years until PS3 gets going. Then, how should I say it, "let get ready to rumbleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee".
