FFVII

In an interview today, Square Enix Senior Vice President of Software Development, Hiromichi Tanaka, discussed the recently released Final Fantasy III. The game has sold 99% of its shipment in Japan so far, making it a very successful title. And the demand is much higher than the supply. After all this success, Square Enix is definitely looking at the whole remake business in a better light.

This is the first time for this game to come to the US. Alongside the plans for FFV and FFVI, we'll soon have seen remakes of every classic FF game. Where do you go from here?

Tanaka: FFIV, V and VI have been ported to the GBA. As you have seen FFIII is not a port but more of a remake. In the future, since FFIII has been received pretty well so far, we're actually considering remaking some of the other Final Fantasy games.

Seeing as Final Fantasy I, II, IV, V have just been released on the Game Boy Advance, it seems unlikely that these titles will be receiving the treatment first. Maybe a Final Fantasy VII port to the DS? Or maybe the much obsessed-over Final Fantasy VII remake for the PlayStation 3? We just might find out soon enough!

» Just say "No" to Square-Enix

Square used to be a good company. They may still be.

But they are definately going downhill.

I don't know about you guys, but product-whoring is not a good company practice.

Square-Enix went borderline when they released FFVII: Advent Children, FFVII Last order, Crisis Core: FFVII, FFVII: Before Crisis, and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus.

Now, Before Crisis, hasn't even debuted yet, but hell, even without that, there's a LOT of FFVII whoring going on.

And where whoring is rampant, quality is questioned.

Why do you think people got worried over the announcement about the games in development for "Fabula Nova Crystalis", the 3 announced FFXIII games?

Because when you split your resources, only so much good can out from it. People know that.

I even heard one person comment on this by saying "Square-Enix dug their own graves when they announced sequels to a game that HASN'T EVEN RELEASED YET."

 » Hmmnn

I agree with you at some points Nameless, but then again you have to keep in mind that the other FFIII games are not direct sequels as stated by Square-Enix, but seperate worlds/stories that share similar universes. In other word's those 3 different games will be pretty different, maybe even to the point in which they feel like completely different FF's.

Something like Xenosaga however were direct sequels to each other. In Xenosaga you're kind of forced to play all of them, and knowing you'll have to dish out a couple more 50 bucks just to complete a game's story isn't really appealing and might get stale.

Thats just my own comparison. Basically, I have no problems with the "whoring" so far because I haven't been let down by their quality of FF games (except I haven't played the DS remakes).

» If they remade FF7 for the PS3

20 million people would probably buy the system just for that game. The graphics would be pretty damn insane too. Maybe they'll put an FF7 sequel on there?

And that's fine. If the variants still meet quality standard to you, then keep buying them.

But personally, I thought Square-Enix lost their touch at FFX.

I didn't like FFX. If you compare FFX to other forms of media, you have to ask yourself, is playing this game more worth my time than doing this or that?

Because in the end, FFX is just a love story. Sure, the battle system is there to introduce a bit of player interactivity, but it's linear and very limited, and pretty much the same as previous FF's to boot.

And when I compare FFX's love story to some of the movies of our age, it doesn't even come close. In fact, the popularity of FFX almost mockingly laughs me in the face as if to tell me that a game doesn't have to have a good story to be successful. It just has to have brand loyalty.

And that's exactly what Square-Enix has. Brand loyalty. Which is fine, if it, as a company, delivers. But like I said earlier, they have already disappointed me.

if ff7s gona get remaked on a heandheld instead of ps3, it has to be on psp i swear, that'd be awesome.

r2 and l2 arent needed for ff7, psp is more than capable.

ds graphics cant make it

if square lost their touch @ ffx, they have well gained it back @ ffxii, it has got some of the highest game rating in history and i myself, having played 30hrs worth of it and still at level 15, can tell you it is more than a 10/10.

perhapes u single-language dumbs can have a go @ it and experience it for yourselves after the english launch, not that i care.

 » Well...

Would you resist if They remade FF7 with the ability to battle enemies in the exact same way as in the movie Advent Children?

FF13 is made under such direction, to recreate the battles of the movie with a game.

So it wouldn't be surprising if a remake of FF7 INCLUDED the Advent Children story...

Well, personally, it's a great imagination, but seeing as how they milked it already, My bet is on FF8 or FF6.

I'll be damn if they remake FF7 for the PS3. If that happens, PS3 wins the console war.

 » My Though

Square bringing all this hype back to FFVII is the reason i think they will do a remake... Not that im for it though... It has long been my all-time favorite game and got me into the RPG genre but i feel if they do a remake just making the graphics amazing will not do it. I feel they would have to make gameplay changes that might change the way the game is played... and that would worry me... in my eyes, How would you change a perfect game??

(remember i said in my eyes... i really dont care if you think the game sucks)

 » FF7 on the PS3?

Yes - A FFVII remake on the PS3 would, as the saying goes, "kick ass"... But I neither want to pay silly money for THAT console, or near to a grand on a TV just to play it with funky graphics... Considering the life of the PS1, I'd be more inclined, if I were them, to remake it for the PS2! Such a shame the youngsters today are so quick to discard the old just because the new comes along! (Besides - I like RUMBLE... Something omitted from the PS3 - No?)

 » FFVII for the DS?

COme on! That system couldn't offer much new in terms of technology then the PS1 had... it'd be more like a port, a weak on at that.

   by Graal (Unregistered) - 2006-09-26

I would personally love a port and upgrade of FF7 but they would have to be carfult how they did it. I think that it would have to come in 2 formats.. one would be updated graphics but with the same mini games and fighting system (though much better looking.) and one with an updated fighting system that was faster and slightly more upto date. That would keep the die hards and the new adopters happy. I am surprised that sony aren't pushing for this more on the PS3 as it would be a massive feather in thier cap. Translations are already done, I don't think voice would add anything to it, story and plot are already set... get working on it Squeenix!

» Do you prefer A Steak with fries or without fries.

What kind of bs survey is this? Of course people are going to prefer Motion sensing and rumble.

Why not post if people prefer motion sensing over rumble. I sure do. 73% is actually a pretty good percentage of people. I am surprise by that. For something you hardly feel after a while it seems highly overrated.

Also this survey was taken over the internet and puts it's authenticity to the ground. Even further MS fans would probably vote just out of spite to make rumble seem more important. How about surveying only people who want a PS3

» oops posted in the wrong article sorry!

What I meant to say is:

Final Fantasy 7 announcement on October event confirmed!

The prophet predicted a FF remake would be revealed.

Believe (the prophet is 15/15 btw)

 » I could imagine it.

The N64 was the more powerful console then the PS1. I could easily see FFVII and FFVIII on the DS. The biggest ROM for the DS is 256MB. But that's not even half of the DS cartridge. I could see it possible. With compression and a couple of extras. I can see it happening.

 » Guys think about it

Remember back in Sept 1997... that's right ff7 came out what's next year? That's right 2007... hmm 10 years huh? That's a perfect reason to re-release/re-make one of the greatest games made. 10 year anniversary! Woot diggity.

The reason why this guy said maybe ds is because of the crazy buying of ff3. They know for a solid fact that they can make mucho money of that little ds product of Nintendo and yes if FF7 re-make came out for ps3. PS3 will win the console war without even batting an eye that simple.

A 10 year anniversary would make absolute sense in my eyes; however; it is very unlikely for them to make a remake in that short amount of time. I'd say it would be more likely between 2008/2009 (if even as early as that). Just sounds more realistic to me (especially for the states.)

 » Square-Enix

Square-Enix isn't bringing the hype back to FFVII, the hype never left. FFVII is the Golden Eye and Halo of the original Playstation (for me, though, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is better). people in the US and Japan cream their pants over FFVII whenever it's mentioned.

there was a demand for more FF content, so Square-Enix, being the business that it is, gave in to that demand. they know, ever since that FFVII tech demo for the PS3, that a remake of that title would be their Ace in the Hole. they will stall that for as long as possible (much like Konami stalling putting Alucard back in the starring role in a Castlevania title), because they know that once they give in, it will sell millions of copies (much like the original). it's like holding on to the get out of jail free card in Monopoly: it's guaranteed to save your ass.

say the sales of some of their latest games start to dwindle, maybe FFXIII doesn't do so well (lol. yeah....right), they'll just whip out a FFVII remake. and if that goes well, they'll do 8 and 9 (8 makes me throw up a little in my mouth, but 9 was great. can you imagine the visuals looking like their CG counterparts?)

and yes, Square-Enix is whoring out their FF series, but Nintendo has been whoring out Mario for the past 20 years. it's a working business model, and i don't fault companies for latching on to that business model (as annoying as it is when they do ***** like that) as, in their eyes, it works. don't blame them, blame the gamers that purchase every single Mario and FF title that is released on a regular basis. the demand is there. and gaming companies are supplying that demand. once the demand drys up, they'll move on to something else to try and get attention from us(insert the creation of the Wii: the GC didn't do so well in Nintendo's eyes, the X Box and PS2 were making Nintendo a distant memory for nostalgic fans, so they took a chance, and voila! we have the Wii). until people stop buying the Tony Hawks and Splinter Cells, we'll always have them. that's not a fault of the developers.

 » Well said Figboy

Supply and demand is the key point in this situation. I can't help but repeat what you said. Even if you got bored of the same game over and over the masses haven't so the co says hey lets make another.

#21 I love the idea. Got to spread the wealth of ff7 ds and ps3 would make everyone happy. I don't think 360 fans are really into these 'rpg' things. Although I do have a 360 and I love rpgs... hmmm

Come on Square Enix, why the Final Fantasy VII love? Come on, games like Seiken Densetsu III (Not even released in the US), Final Fantasy II (I liked it, and the final boss theme in the GBA version is catchy), and Chrono Trigger are the games that made you famous. Put one of those on the DS. I think the world has seen enough Sephiroth for once.
