This from the guy who had an Italian plumber throw fireballs at goombas and turtles.Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's main man, says that he is "concerned" that developers are using violence too much in their games. Guess he's not a fan of Grand Theft Auto 4, huh? I don't want to curb freedom of expression, but I am concerned many developers focus on excessive violence in order to stimulate people's minds. I believe that here are more ways of grabbing players' attention than violence alone. Well you know what they say. Violence isn't the answer. Put the sword down, Link. Miyamoto also talked about the troubles the economy is currently facing, saying that: We need to eat in order to live, that’s our first priority. But entertainment and the enrichment of our souls must come in second place. Nintendo’s mission is to take advantage of improving and cheaper technology to create reasonable and affordable entertainment. It’s very good value.

SOMEHOW..
though i don't recall seeing a trailer where they "commercialized" about violence, so it's bullcrap, atleast in the "trailer-department"
of course almost very game nowadays is violent, but that's because you do a certain "task" (kill someone), and then you're rewarded with non-violent (sometimes) video!!
people prefer killing things in games, and then be rewarded with sequences, so it's like watching an interactive movie.
though i don't think i needed to write this at all, you all know that already of course :)

was epic fail.
violence in video games is good, because it lets people get their stress out. I know whenever I'm p.issed I just boot up GTA4, shotgun some people in the face, and voila--I'm feeling much better...

Miaymoto isnt saying he never made a violent game, only developers are relying on violence too much. Look at his track record, not all his games contain violence.

That's pretty much it.
Most games have some level of violence, well, by violence you just mean the core of the term (conflicts resolved through attack) then pretty much every game has violence.
It's the overly violent games I don't like. Even though I did grow up on Mortal Kombat.

Im even more concern about deveopers using too much gayness in his games, like a plumber dressed in a bee suit or an elf like girly boy in leotards but hey who am i to judge.

» pot calling the kettle black, but yeah i sort of agree
@ tekkenlord
you talk of "too much gayness in his (miyamoto) games" that you forget that even tekken, the game which you obviously get your username from, has its equal parts of gayness.
miguel... bob... the guy that looks like wesley snipes. and omg leo?! heheehe. nina and anna look like *****hags - they're fun! oh and jin's pretty gayfriendly too. ^_^ half naked all the time and all muscley. ooh. fanservice much? (if you swing that way, at least)
but hey, who am i to judge. i love tekken either way. and i love nintendo games too. gay as they all are. violent as they all are. call them what you will. they're fun and that's what matters to me (extra fanservice won't hurt much either tho). ;-)

Wii music failed horribly. Wii fit is useless and overpriced. Endless mario sequels are getting old, real fast.

He's right. 99% of games fall back onto violence in the absence of an original idea. It's become such a standard that game producers probably don't even attempt to come up with anything more original than "Kill so and so to get to the next level."

yes i hate this days cuz like u said games producers only come with the same ***** al over and over and nothing more original than Kart races again, stupid jump over the big bad boss three times and get to the next level or even worse pikachu vs snake in the same ol' ***** game only with more chars.
But the fault its not of those greedy bastards but of the asses that buy those crap games they already played, poor idiots

» "Buy peripherals instead."
Call it unoriginal, but at least violence sells, whereas the experimental nature of the wii's standard peripheral has not been too friendly to developers outside of Nintendo itself. Red Steel is a fairly good example of forgetting the basics that were laid out by its spiritual predecessors.
Also, most hacks of the tried-and-true formula don't do well enough to demonize them as a standard. Plenty of FPSes and whatnot are lost in the bargain bin. It just happens that good visceral visuals and the standard kill-or-be-killed reinforcement cycle keep people entertained, but only if that game happens to be slightly better than their previous experience. Being subtle about bringing fun is always viewed with skepticism.
Really, it's like telling Nintento to stop making their own games because they predicate themselves off of being non-violent. It doesn't seem as ridiculous given that Nintendo is the only one producing successful, and perhaps noticeable, reincarnations that are directed to a younger demographic.
Originality in art direction is a gamble, and although it's nice to think that every company has the talent and resources to reinvent the box, it is freakishly Utopian and ridiculous. Not every artist redefines an art movement, so expecting game companies to bend new forms of reinforcement in a uncooperative environment is a bit cruel. Instead, game developers are improving the box the best they can while minimizing their chances of being unacceptably unrewarding.
I nearly forgot, non-violence has been serialized. Rhythm games have been doing it ever since the glory-days of DDR and further into the popularity of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Make that non-violent, non-musical.

» WHOOOOOOT?
ok now seriously, do you honestly belive all the crap u wrote i mean "so expecting game companies to bend new forms of reinforcement in a uncooperative environment is a bit cruel"
WHOOOOT? i mean so now its poor poor MULTI BILLION TRIZILLION GAME COMPANIES? i mean just look at nintendo, EA and all the other game developers that can be called GIANTS, do they invest a PENNY in at least "trying" to reinvent a game: NO. NO and oh yes NO.
Please open your ayes look at smash bros brawl, is it a different game than the prevous one: NO its the EXACT same engine with wow: new graphics? more characters? the gamecube COULD HAVE DONE THAT, and they didnt do it different cuz of the "feaaaaaR" of not liking it or not selling it BUT CUZ OF THE FEAR OF INVESTING MONEEEEEEY, MO-NE-Y.
Cuz a new engine, a new gameplay and making a NEW FUC*** GAME would have taken MONEY, and being the greedy bastards they are i know how they think: investing in a new game, mmm no just do the same with lame "improvements" anyway the MORONS that play game nowadays gonna love it and NEVER going to ask "why this feel and look like my old game? XD
Look at FIFAS i mean if the prgrammers only change the logo and the start screen wow what a job i wonder how can they have in time the next one XD, SMACK DOWNS, BURN OUTS you name it , HELL even Silent hill and Devil may cry now can come with another "installement" on the "series" within a month cuz of this "winning formula" u said it too "Guitar CRAP the same HERo" and so on and on WHY? Cuz companies dont have to invest a CRAP to WIN A TRIZILLION DOLARS theres your why, so when miyamoto do something really NEW then he can come and criticise others for relying on the same thing he is doing: "peoples stupidity"

» Miyamoto is right
This days if you go to a videogame store most of the games available are very, very violent and there's little variety outside of the action and fps. Miyamoto what's saying is that there should be more variety, not eliminating violence nor is he saying it's bad. Infact, I remember that a couple of months ago there was an article in QJ where he was defending violence in games because it's an art form, although it shouldn't be the only thing developers, and he is right about that. I for one would like to see more cool games that wouldn't have to be excesively violent, but a little violence it's always good.
