James Callaghan - Image 1After losing three consecutive games of FIFA 2008 (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, DS) to his brother and a friend, 17-year-old James Callaghan nearly emptied a bottle of vodka, armed himself with an axe and a long-bladed knife, and went on a drunken rampage around the neighborhood that left an unfortunate 65-year-old widow dead.

On the early hours of December 28th last year, Callaghan marched outside his house armed with the axe and knife. His first targets were two girls eating takeout on a bench. Callaghan slammed the axe into the space on the bench between them and said, "I'll stab you and chop off her head off." The girls were able to make a run for it, terrified. Callaghan went after two others, both lucky to have gotten away.

The next one was not so lucky. 65-year-old Irene Robertson was inside her home when Callaghan forced his way inside it and struck the poor widow on the head with the axe six times, and used the knife to stab her repeatedly with the knife. "On the flat walls and on a mirror Callaghan had written a message to his mother in lipstick saying that he was sorry and hadn't intended to kill an old woman," said prosecutor Guy Kearl.

Callaghan's message, written in lipstick - Image 1Callaghan, now 18 years old, admitted to manslaughter "on the grounds of diminished responsibility and unlawful wounding." After the arrest, Callaghan was also found to be a paranoid schizophrnenic. Psychiatrists reported that he was telling them he had been hearing voices inside his head telling him to kill, and that he saw a man "with horns on his head." Callaghan explained that he drank heavily to cope with those.

When it all happened, however, Callahan had no prior convictions, but neither was he receiving treatment for his mental condition. According to his friends, Callaghan is known to be a violent drunk. When he was six, he threatened his mom with a kitchen knife. He had since been referred to three occasions with a psychiatric nurse, but received no real treatment.

James Callaghan has now been sent to a high-security mental hospital.

Obviously, it wasn't FIFA 08. Although it was also mentioned in the source that Callaghan also played the notorious GTA IV, it was obviously the alcohol and the mental condition that led to the attacks.

You had to throw in GTA! I was about to comment about how Jack Thompson could now lead a crusade to put an end to the murderous sport of Soccer.

Hey what do you know, I commented on it inadvertently anyhow!

The only thing he can crusade against is unemployment.

Riiiight... Common sense says that you MUST have a law degree to be an activist? You sure don't use much common sense do you Mr. Common Troll.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2009-10-29
 » .

Have you seen him advocating anything (and taken seriously) since being disbarred?

He was never successful and banning games or introducing game legislation that was even deemed constitutional, even as a lawyer.

You would have to be one of those "news readers" to realize that, idiot.

 » it's amazing

How people get away with murder just because of this schizophrnenic ***** sad man sad world we live in.

   Re: hush404 - 2009-10-27
 » ...

There's lots of people dealing with some form of schizophrenia and don't go on drunken rampages hacking up old ladies.

Sad, not only that they're given a free ticket (tho... a high security metal hospital isn't exactly a free ticket) but also, people suffering from Schizophrenia everywhere... just got another kick in the balls from the media. Now general society have more fuel for fearing and thus alienating anyone with this condition.

Old Lady: You finally got here.

» Oh JAYZUS CRUST! HERE WE GO AGAIN.

2 news articles involving murder and videogames in one day? What a blasted shame!. and you still think it's the videogame's fault right?? or even the drink?? WRONG!

If he loses 3 consecutive matches to his brother and his friend (who should have stopped him from going on the rampage), THEN HE FAUKIN SUCKS @ FIFA!. Though he was also a schizophrnenic and was drinking vodka, it doesn't give him any type of excuse to go out and randomly murder ppl. he looks european too (no offense)

 » Its obvious...

who the culprit is, video games of course. If he had never played Fifa, he never would have killed anyone. It wasn't the schiz, or the vodka, or the previous anger situations involving him threatening his mom.

I just pray to God he doesn't go to dairy queen and then start killing. Because then Ice cream will be EVIL!!!

who is responsible for the drivel that passes as journalism on this *****hole site? is it run by scientologists or something? this kind of drivel writing has a special place on the *****list.

another alcohol kill that is refering to games.....
thoe games have nothing to do with it. allways the same

   by SaDuWo - 2009-10-28
 » Seriously...

I'm sick of all these things trying to link video games to violent behavior. I play God of War, Grand Theft Auto, occasionally go crazy on Saints Row (though it's not as classy as GTA, but fun to mess around), and a whole array of manslaughter-filled games, in addition to all the others I play, of course. I limit myself to only games that are fun, I don't care what genre, but anyways. My point is, I have a 4.0 gpa, I do volunteer work all the time and participate in community events. From all the crap these people are drawing conclusions from, I could say that my playing of violent video games is the source of my positive personality and hard work. I'm sick of people drawing conclusions from two present facts. It's like a guy runs and jumps off a cliff, and there's another guy there he was hanging out with that was unaware, and he gets charged for pushing the guy off. It makes no sense.

   by NickyP - 2009-10-28
 » Schizo?

If he truly did hear voices and see "a man with horns on his head", this guy was a little more than schizo. He needed a priest or two.

   Re: NickyP - 2009-10-28
 » Furthermore,

Furthermore, you guys are all crybabies. The article never said anywhere that it was the games fault. It's an unarguable fact however that what triggered this rampage was the frustration of losing in a video game and heavy drinking. If what triggered this was country music and beer, no one would say country music was to blame.

Seriously, a lot of people are peeved at Jack Thompson's antics, but you don't have to be a wimp and cry foul play everytime a game is associated with crime, especially if the game isn't even taking blame.
   by Impuls3 - 2009-10-28
 » Aw man..

After doing that he was sent to a mental hospital? He should be sent to jail, where the "voices inside his head" would be the last thing he has to worry about.
