The E3's been disappointing fans and developers alike, and we all know they need to shake things up or else. Now we hear of a rumor surrounding the games industry event as reported by Kotaku, and it seems like they're thinking of opening it to the public. There's no official word on this yet - we've heard lots of "official words" regarding changes in the event's format, only to be found absolutely wrong later on - although it's been said that the idea has already been brought forward for discussion by the board of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). Instead, what we found as an update on Gamespot is a "No Comment" comment from ESA senior vice president for communications and research, Rich Taylor. As we do every year, the ESA solicits feedback and direction from exhibitors and attendees on how best to adapt and evolve the E3 Media & Business Summit to ensure it meets their needs. Each element of the Summit is opened for discussion, and that process is ongoing to execute a productive and efficient experience. Regarding today's published reports, the ESA does not comment on rumors and speculation, and will make an announcement about the details and logistics of the 2009 E3 Media & Business Summit at the appropriate time. There's been some major fallout in E3's circle of pals, like Activision Blizzard who chose to skip the party this year, and instead hold its own event in the same week. That's apart from all the critics who've thrown in their two cents on the current form of E3, such as EA's John Riccitiello, Ubisoft's Laurent Detoc, and EA Sports' Peter Moore. Let's see if ESA can cook up something that will lure them back for the 2009 E3. Keep it posted here for more updates. Related E3 2008 news: |

» Keep it private
They've already demonstrated they don't want us. I say, fine. You don't want me, then I'll keep my money in my pocket.
Boycott anyone who attends E3!

» I agree 100%
I just love how these companies/associations tell us they don't need us, then, when they start to fail miserably, they cry for us back, and people come in droves.
What happened to our society, where people used to have a spine ? Now, it consists of people who bend over left right and center to take it "all the way" and smile about it. Oh, the Xbox has a 33% failure rate... duh, that's ok. Every Playstation 3 game is delayed beyond comprehension, duh, that's ok. The Wii doesn't have a single hardcore game, duh, that's ok. E3 kicks us out, then if they cry for us back, duh, that's ok, I'll attend. Pfft .... !
I'm with Braktar... E3, you had your shot, you were huge, you were loved, then you shut us out, don't expect us to come running back.

» I See Your Point - E3 Bailed
I see your point. But with E3 technically being the most known and conversed about, I think a strong return is possible. I'm still upset in their stupidity to keep the public out.
I guess they forgot that we actually play the *****ing games. I think E3 now realizes they have been throwing a pretty lame party.
First, I thought another convention would steal the glory but I doubt it. But yeah, bailing on the public was mistake Number 2 kids.
Realizing that their was a time where you actually gave this idea the green-light was mistake Number 1.
E3 has one last chance.

» Rumor?
Even if this isn't a rumor, it would take some time before the community warms up to the event again, and I doubt E3 will ever have the same relevance as it did before.
Since other events have flourished since E3 closed in on itself, like Leipzig and PAX, E3 doesn't have that much pulling power anymore. Especially since it screwed up badly this year.
But if E3 does want to save itself, going public would be a good way to do it.
