The R4 team was generous enough to send me their newest (and only flashcart under this name), the R4 DS which seemed to come out of nowhere. However, this little device delivers everything a homebrew fan would wish for (or a pirate for that matter..). The R4 delivers on all major bases for the DS, homebrew and multimedia support. With competitors being priced much higher and offering some different features (highest at 125$ for dancing LED's and an insane chipset), the R4 DS still comes out on top, or close to top in my opinion. This is one flashcart that I can strongly recommend due to its remarkably low price-point. Many of you may be aware of the controversy over R4 and M3 being the same team, much like M3 and G6, however both products are different in there own way (M3 DS Simply and R4 DS). Both these products will receive their own reviews unqiue to each product. The only noticeable differences are in the system's OS, the frequency of updates and the way they look (hardware). I personally like both stickers that are on the products, M3 DS Simply looks nice with the white casing while the R4 seems to look nice in both white and black. The entire concept of a slot-1 DS flashcart is the "ease of use" part and allows for new entries into the DS homebrew scene with little effort. The DS-Xtreme was one of the first of this new generation to offer full homebrew support and NDS support, while adding a few unnecessary (but impressive features). The DS-Xtreme's core "chipset" is more powerful than the NDS theoretically, however the R4 team has gone basic with all features - making it cheap for the consumer (45$). With a keychain holder (holds two cartridges), you are able to hold your R4 DS and the accompanied black/white case that you can swap with the aid of a screwdriver. The R4 DS uses MicroSD memory cards as the memory medium, and with 512mb being found at 10$-20$, this product offers the most space for the least amount of money (half the price of the DS-Xtreme). Also, like more modern slot-1 flashcarts, no-passme functionality is built-in so you can use this flashcart on any NDS that is out on the market. Ease-of-use is definitely expressed in this device, with just a few files required to be placed on your memory stick to get up and going. You can even select from several skins to begin with (on CD that is packaged with the units). The R4 DS fully delievers with NDS homebrew support and NDS game support (won't be discussed). The ability to click an drag homebrew and other files has become natural to me, eliminating the needed conversion of some NDS files as Slot-2 flashcarts required. After using this device, I don't think it will be possible for anyone to go back to using a slot-2 flashcart. However, some software can still be used with the R4 DS with such functions as ROM trimming and save converting (something of which most slot-1 flashcart miss out on). Speed is always a concern with some picky users, and the R4 DS delievers on speed as well with fast game loads and no noticeable slowdowns. Everyone seems to live by the fact that if Castlevania doesn't work, then the flashcart isn't worth it. Well, Castlevania does work so this flashcart is worth it. The games load up much faster than the DS-Xtreme it seems (even with using MicroSD's as the storage medium opposed to internal). Multimedia support is the same as it always has been with M3 devices, using Moonshell as their main source of multimedia execution. Moonshell is hands-down the greatest multimedia application for the Nintendo DS, and when coupled with the R4 DS, makes a perfect multimedia device. With updates coming out frequently (2 major updates since launch), the R4 DS is a great competitor and is the flashcart the I recommend to all NDS-owners looking to get into the "scene" (The most recent update of which adds support for soft-reset and hiding unnecessary files from being shown in the game menu). Consumer support seems to be on their mind, something of which a consumer really benefits from, specially after investing their money into a new product. whats the capaity for this?
This doesn't have onboard memory, it uses transflash/microsd cards for storage... I own this card and its the best comparison for cost and functionality.
you got a freebie for a good review? or am i wrong?
They got freebies of all the flash carts, just liked this one better.
The R4 is made by the same people as M3. (note the similar names) If you look at the PCB they're pretty much identical aside from one or two solder points
This is an awful review; it tells us basically nothing we can't already figure out, except for some points which are, quite frankly, dubious. Reading reviews like this makes me want to claw my eyes out. What kind of person gives a 10/10 rating yet caveats that with saying a 10/10 isn't perfect? Having trouble with math lately? The whole "grading system" getting the better of you? If you mean "worth your investment", but won't go so far as "perfect", then that usually resolves to something between a 7 or an 8. If you can't stick to your numbers, then your numbers are worthless. You might as well have given it a 100000 out of 10, and just weasel out by trying to refine the definition of "perfect".
As another example, here's a compatibility list that you can find online:
http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/R4_compatibility_list
Note that they list Castlevania: POR as a problematic game, as a function of what SD media you use.
Did you just load the game up and watch the intro, or did you actually play through it? There are specific, known problem points in the game. Did you get to those points? What MicroSD card did you use?
Could you please donate your card to someone who can do a proper review?
I have to agree there are well better reviews around like gbatemp.net and all homebrew isnt compatible yet, dsorganise doesnt like it yet but might do should the right file handler be implemented, sheesh crap review must say i chimp with a pencil scribbling on a piece of paper could probably do better. ;)
DSorganize now supports DLDI as the newest version....

I've tried this recently and I have to admit it is one of the better flashcard adapters for the price.
However, it has one slightly annoying flaw (at least on my machine).
I have a flashed NDS, so if I boot up with supercard it goes directly to the supercard menu screen (ugly as it is)
But with the R4DS it shows the annoying health and warning screen. That's about 2-3 seconds of battery life wasted.
It may just be what I flashed the NDS with but for now I'll stick with my supercard until someone tells me that there is a way of getting around it.
i cant believe u just said that because u have to see the health and warning screen its 2-3 seconds battery life wasted...what does 2 secs do to your life that u have to complain about it?
my ds lite is not flashme, so i love my r4ds. i'm glad i don't have a flashme b/c if i had to wait 2-3 for the health screen to go away that'd suck. good for me i don't have flashme, so when i load r4ds, it shows the health screen for like half a second, then boots to r4 main menu hehe
Hi, I am new to the whole Roms thing. I love my new DS, but I have never been good at video games. Is there a flash card like the R4DS or M3 that will allow cheat emulators or something. I already have an action replay but I plan on getting one of these game replacements. Which one can I use.
After owning an R4 for 2 weeks now I must say that I am most pleased with it. I have not owned any other DS carts, but the price sure attracted me to it and it is bloody easy to use. I also have enjoyed how often the software is updated for it, multiple times since I ordered mine in Dec. No flashing, just program your SD card and go!
I must say however that the spring which holds the SD care in place is simply aweful, at least on my unit. It is a nightmare to get the SD card to click into place, it seems to want to double click itself which means as soon as it goes into place, the spring pushes it out 0_o If I am really, really nice to it though it will click once and hold the card in, once it does this it does not seem to have any inclinations to click itself out, which is good.
I'm using a 1 GB Kingston card I got for 17 dollars. I don't want to remove the card to see exactly which one it is, but not 1 single game has shown any problems like the occasional lag I have heard about on some products.
Overall 44 (plus 5 dollars shipping) for the kit, 17 for the memory...not bad ^_^
Personally I would give it a 8 out of 10 when you consider the SD --> USB adapter also seems a little second rate, but I already own another so I just threw it in a drawer.
PS. Anyone know where you can get a screwdriver that will open the R4 so I can change it to the darker case?
