Ó

Nintendo DS emulated on the PSP - Image 1We're already driving into the weekend, expecting to hit the usual slowdown on updates, however, recent developments in the QJ forums (thanks for the tip, Glynnder!) have made us think that this is probably one of the homebrew community's most intense weeks in a long time. The OE source code, Team Wildcard's 3.40 LE CFW, Dark AleX actively talking to Sony, and now... a Nintendo DS Emulator on the PSP.

For all intents and purposes though, and right off the bat, we'd have to say that we can't host the download. One of the main reasons is that the emulator taps into the BIOS - thus leading to its illegality - and the second reason being its infantile stage. We hear the emulator isn't working all that perfect; running games ends up in lock ups and glitches.

So right now, we'd just have to report about its existence, and for the sake of discussion, talk about the implications. One of the biggest hurdles here, of course, is that, how would a DS emulator work without the DS' biggest features: the touchscreen? The experience of getting to play the real Nintendo DS will be watered down in an emulated Nintendo DS on the PSP, but see, isn't that what emulators are defined as?

We know you have a lot of questions, proclamations, and out bursts of joy. So we'll leave you with two options: 1) you may comment below, or 2) proceed to the forum thread for an in-depth discussion. However. Please bear in mind that we will not tolerate any links, information, or other details on where or how to get ROMs and illegal files.

Many thanks to Glynnder for sending in the tip!

Seems pretty cool, however, seems liek it would take the fun out of it. (No Touchscreen)

You host the DGEN Sega Emulator and that has a BIOS file, so what's the difference?

Re: dont forget (Unregistered) - 2007-08-09
 » reason # 2

its infantile stage. We hear the emulator isn't working all that perfect; running games ends up in lock ups and glitches.

if that's so then you shouldnt have you shouldnt have hosted deadulas 64 emu.

or cfw with 2 or 3 updates to it, cause it's "buggy".

so you have no point nor reason not to post up a DL link

   Re: cheeb (Unregistered) - 2007-08-09
 » DGEN

I suppose it's because it's highly unlikely SEGA will sue PSPUpdates for hosting its' intellectual property based on the fact SEGA stopped selling the Megadrive/Genesis about 10 years ago... same rationale as abandonware.

there are a lot of gray areas with regards to these things, and there will always be the "iffy stuff". there are a whole lot of other reasons why we can't host the download, and we hope that no one posts any comments here of where to get it. keep it clean. ^_^

how is no touchscreen taking the fun out of it? I understand it would be a little strange with both NDS screens either sharing the PSP screen or switching back and forth, but it's the idea behind having a NDS emulator on your PSP which makes it so amazing. That would be like having Wii and Xbox 360 emulators on your PS3. Unless this gets running at full speed and maybe gets in the news or something so everybody knows about it, I don't see it effecting NDS sales at all, though.

...ew. no. Besides, even if you're one of those people that thinks the games for the PS3 are bad or Sony is a bad company or it was just all a ploy to get blu-ray going which is going to fail in the end anyway, the PS3 has better specs so my example is still valid.

Because of the duel screen format they practically made it worthless to emulate their games. Kinda like that for the wii too, with the controller and all but probably more possibilities with the wii games.

Um, no chance? Excuse me, but how long has the PS2 lasted? And it's still going, too. It seems perfectly believable that due to blu-ray it may well outlast the other consoles (and 4 years? What console by sony or nintendo ever lasted on 4 years?)

And your claim about computers being better is moronic...computers have always been better than the best current game console in processing power, but that hasn't kept a single console down yet, has it?

ok ok, yeah this is cool, but alot games are designed to use both screens at the same time. But honestly i own both psp, and the nds. And trust me....it wouldnt have the same unique feel to play games! Cool, but pointlesswith out the tpuch screen! THATS WHAT MAKES THE NDS.... DUAL SCREEN!

   Re: jrfhoutx - 2007-08-19
 » Xbox360 +PS3

@metalspector:

your 360 games look better than the PS3 versions not because the system is harware and software superior but because developers have had more time to get used to programming for the consoles architecture than they have had for the PS3 (over a year in fact, the 360 was released in May of '05 and the PS3 was released in November of 06). Based purely on specs alone (since projected console life really has no bearing on superiority) the PS3 is far superior to the 360. if you want a good example then look at the 360 launch titles and compare them to the PS3 launch titles, graphically the PS3 is superior. launch titles for the PS3 are very close to the same quality of brand new games for a console that has over a years head start. that is what people don't consider when they compare the 360 to the PS3, they compare current cross platform games to each other, you can only do that if the two consoles came out at the exact same time, when they come out at different times, you have to compare launch titles (since devs have had more time to get used to one dev environment than the other you have to put them on equal ground and compare periods when devs had the same limited knowledge of the environment), and when you do that, there really is no comparison...

I have to say every pokemon game played on the PSP was the greatest experience ever. I have never completed Sonic and nuckles but on the PSP i played part of that series straight through the day. Sony should just take this and run with it emulate everything but Nintendo i guess so they could make a heap of the people who dont know about homebrew.

I've tried this out and it works to an extent you press R-Trigger to 'Touch' the screen and move with the thumb stick, but trying to see both screens crammed into one PSP screen is hard on the eyes...

Only play games that are not dependent on both screens like Mario games, etc.

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-09
 » ...

the same is true with DS. If you have a firmware version too high you can't use mods. And unlike PSP they're permanent so you have to wait for a new hardware mod. PSP you can downgrade. Then its as simple as drag and drop the homebrew to your ms. PSP also has a more dedicated base of homebrew users and developers resulting in a larger quantity and higher quality homebrew.

   Re: Bob (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
» Read up on things before talking Mohaas

Things like the R4 work on every firmware for the DS, and always will. You dont need to mess about with the flashing, which everyone knows, is the worst part about PSP homebrew. I hated flashing my PSP the first time, knowing what a mistake could do to it.

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10

yeah sure...until nintendo *****s you and puts in a new firmware. And no homebrew requires flashing. You only flash to modify the firmware.

DS homebrew is so lame. There is like 1 release a month. Everyday I see a new psp DL. And its not hard to flash. Only n00bs are too chicken to do a downgrade that has caused like 1 brick because of idiots.

   Re: kefka12 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
»  Read up on things before talking bob

running homebrew with r4 has nothing to do with flashing at all. and no, it wont work on higher firmware. lets see u get any kind of emulation running on a lite off the shelf.

psp is way better for homebrew anyway. i mean, hit back and look at the right side of your screen. ds cant emulate half that.

Now if only it were a standard feature and not something we had to hack. Sony are idiots, yes, but they've created a great system.

I expect your news posters to be able to determine that porting a PC emulator like this one to PSP does not constitute as a significant accomplishment. Lots of emulators were ported to PSP, and this one was not more work than any of them. You're just feeding another big hype machine, telling people about how big of a thing this emulator is when you should know very well that the performance will never be acceptable by anyone's standards (except perhaps those who desperately show it to their DS owning friends).

Do a little research, and you'll see that the emulator they ported struggles to run fullspeed on a decently equipped a PC. Whoever ported this probably just did it for attention, knowing full well that they'll never be able to do anything to make it significantly better.

That the DS can emulate any console the psp can except the PS1? Seems you lack knowledge of the DS homebrew scene. Not to mention the N64 emulator for the DS is way better than Daedalus. Also, Quake on the DS can use the touch screen as a keyboard screen for talking with other players. Lots of homebrew for the DS are touch screen integrated. I know the PSP homebrew scene could be way better than the DS homebrew scene but the fact that sony is so greedy and likes to ***** on hackers makes the DS triumph in the homebrew division...

 » hmmm

I'm not sure never played it before, and I don't have it on my R4 at the moment, but let me check.........

Okay, It doesn't require touch screen, and you only really use it in menus and inventory stuff. touch screen does nothing during actual gameplay.

pretty good conversion actually, I think I'l lplay this for while

Re: Gino D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2007-08-09
 » Resident Evil: Deadly Silence...

doesn't necessarily use the touch screen. well, it depends actually. there are two modes you can play the game on. the original classic (same as the original PSOne game) or rebirth mode. rebirth is the same as classic, only with dozens of other features: touch screen knife battles, mic support, etc.

yeah, i got to play it. definitely worth buying. it pwnt like whoa.
   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2007-08-09
 » b..but but how?

Honestly, how? first of all, you need a touch screen. without it, you get a limited emulator. You won't be able to play large amounts of the DS game library. (R and analog button is not a good substitute for a real touch screen)

Also, you need 2 screens. And splitting the PSP screen doesn't seem to be a good solution. (ie, tiny resolution for both screens). or have a higher res by holding the PSP sideways, but that won't let you access the buttons.

The Emulator seems like it won't be worth using.

tl;dr: no touch screen + small split screens = FAIL.

   Re: Nub (Unregistered) - 2007-08-09
» Not to mention itll never reach good speeds

We don't even have a full speed N64 emulator on our PSPs (although we're close). Getting an NDS emulator running at full speed would be impossible. People are still to this day working on getting a DS to run on a computer with 10 times the specs the PSP has. Cmon QJ, why post stuff like this? It only makes the PSP Fanboys make claims that the PSP > DS, when in reality this 'emulator' proves nothing. A good enough coder can get an emulator of any type to run on the PSP, its just a matter of how well it runs.

"And splitting the PSP screen doesn't seem to be a good solution. (ie, tiny resolution for both screens). "

Um, you'd have the same resolution as DS's screens. PSP has a larger resolution than both DS's screens combined

 » Its Possible

"This is stupid, why would anyone try this, its a waste of time"
I can't help but remember when people used to say this same things about the N64 emulator, and look where we are now with Deadelus. Actually, spec-wise the N64 is more powerful than the DS. So, basically, since we already have almost-decent performance in N64 games, theoretically a decent performing DS emulator is possible.

Data (From Wikipedia):
N64
2 processors - 93.75 MHz and 62.5 MHz
4 MB ram
Max Fill Rate: 150,000 Polygons per second

DS
2 processors - 67 MHz and 33 MHz
4 MB ram
Max Fill Rate: 120,000 Polygons per second

» N64 on PSP is crap

I'm tired of people listing N64 as something PSP can do

I love the PSP and all but c'mon, N64 emulation on PSP flat out isn't good at all and shouldn't be listed as something the PSP can do because it's not worth the space it takes up on the memory stick

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-11
 » stfu

first of all a N64 rom is like 4-16MB which is nothing (unless you have a 32mb but you cant do ***** on those). And games like Super Mario 64 and Super Smash Bros. run at almost full speed. So it isn't crap unlike your lies.

Mario 64 and SSB both run at less the half speed no sound most of the time

sure there's a few spots in SM64 that run pretty well, but go into a level and the framerate severely drops

same goes for SSB

 » Eh?

Arguing about 360 and PS3 is really dumb. Both machines have good and bad points, as with anything ever. Also if you think they won't try to release a new PS soon after or around the same time as the next XBox, no matter what "life expectancy" is claimed, you're an idiot. No company can afford to skip a console generation.

You can actually emulate PSP on DS. Althought the screen resolution is less, it runs perfectly with added rom from a device like the m3. Crappy vis, but essentially the same games

   Re: gregerson316 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » HAHAHAHAHAH LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, and I can emulate an N64 on an SNES. Just jam the N64 cartridge with a gameshark in the SNES and it works. I can also emulate a PS2 on a PS1, and an Xbox 360 on a regular Xbox. Cmon give me a break. The games are nothing alike. How can you fit 1.8 gigs on a crappy cartridge. You cant, so how are the games essentially the same? And just so no noobs ask any stupid questions, I was just being sarcastic about all that emulation.

DS: 67mhz or the DS processor and 33mhz for the GBA processor with 4mb RAM.

Thats like saying PS2 can emulate PS3. You stupid butthole did your parents drop you on your head? Even mentally dead people are smarter than you.

what if someone takes a apart the ds and takes the touchscreen out then take apart the psp's faceplate screen and attach the ds touchscreen to the psp??? you would need 2 nintendo ds's to take apart the touchscreen on both then put them both together on the psp. but hey wouldn't that be well worth it?
