It seems Nintendo still have control over the handheld market. After the release of Sony's over hyped PSP system, in direct competition with the DS, many predicted Nintendo would loose their previsouly unchallenged (by anything decent) reign over the handheld market. They were wrong. Recent figures show that Nintendo owns 78% of the handheld market, with the GameBoy Advance accounting for 41%, the DS 31% and Sony's PSP just 28%. How the situation will be after the Christmas buying spree remains to be seen, but, for know, Nintendo are firmly on top.

It's funny how all the PSP fanboy's who like to come in here and explain how Nintendo are going to go out of business thanks to the PSP have gone quiet...

what i can't understand is how either side could fight at this point. both are selling like crazy, both are doing amazingly well and both are currently short on good titles.(i've got animal crossing for ds and burnout for psp) but, after roaming around ign and 1up for a while the future looks really bright for both little handhelds. I just don't see why anyone could HATE either handheld...anyone know?

darkquirrel - After the sleek and shiny PSP was released alot of editors and writers in the majority of game mags, and the buzz over the forums were that the DS will be squashed..
now that there's evidence to the contrary, there is a tendency to gloat a bit :)
And besides that the numbers you see represent the hardware department. I believe that software-wise the numbers are alot steeper in favor of the DS (although the PSP was doing well with UMD movies) with games coming out like Animal Crossing DS and Mario Kart DS and Nintendogs....

Those are my two cents... It's not HATING it's a little bit of gloating and it will pass..

This is just showing figures on what handheld system is controlling the market. GBA has been out forever so that explains that. DS was out for before the the PSP which explains why the PSP is just 3% behind. The DS is just stupid; and very stupid looking. My friends might laugh at me if they saw me with a DS. All my friends either have or are getting for Christmas a PSP... why? becuase they are cool. They have real 3D games and not stupid kiddy games like mario. And when was the last time you watched Spiderman2 on your DS? Just wait, by the end of next year PSP will own and DS' will sell for $35 used at you local EB.

yeah wow i hope you and all your friends sit around and say how cool you all are , god how cool will that be with your cool psp's telling each other your all cool, and not having a single independant thought between your group eh.
wow i cant belive your buying a system becasue its cool, get a grip you spotty little gimp, and get a life of your own, media troll.

Picture this: IF... ok? If psp and ds have the same price tag of $250... Ask yourself. Which one would you buy?

   by (Unregistered) - 1999-11-30

I wouldn't pay $250 for any console let alone a handheld. And I for sure wouldn't pay $250 to look cool and not have any good games to play. I have two NDS', one for my wife and one for me. We play them against each other. If I was to do that with a PSP I would have to fork out $500 plus games. There is only one game that I can think of that we could even have fun playing together on the PSP.

Well, i bought a NDS today after owning 3 psp's. At first i hated the NDS like mad, after seeing all the corney 2-d ill-detailed demo games. Also, i didnt find the NDS innovative with touch screen (i have 11 PDA's with touch screen games on it) untill i bought nintendogs today, and now i realized im wrong about the nds. It truly is innovative with voice command and i love how you can blow bubbles just by blowing at the mic.

But overall, i like the psp for its design, hi quality screen, multimedia, and hacks (hehe)

I like the DS for its fun games, and the features used to play the games (touch screen, voice..etc)

But future games for the psp will definatly boost psp sales for sure. If the final fantasy title ever comes to the psp, then psp is sealed to be the winner in sales no doubt.

Actually Anonymous at 11:56am if we look at this news story we see that both the GBA and the DS each separately outsold the PSP in November. So you can't try claiming this lead is because the GBA and DS came out before the PSP. The DS has been outselling the PSP in every territory world wide since the launch of Nintendogs. The only thing outselling the DS is (amazingly) the good old GBA!

As to the question of paying $250 for the DS, in light of the recent games like Mario Kart, Advance Wars and Viewtiful Joe to name but a few, I would definitely buy the DS over the PSP. The thing is, what's the point of a price comparison? We all know the PSP is more expensive, it has very advanced hardware so it has to cost that much. The point at the moment is the DS has much better games, and the sales reflect that. It doesn't matter how expensive/powerful the machine is, if the games are worth buying people will buy it. The PS2 managed to sell well enough at $300 when it was first released...

Also keep this in mind. The PSP is a portable multimedia device, the DS is a gaming console, that's it. The DS is meant for games, and it does that well. The PSP is meant for a multitude of things. Honestly, if I want a portable multimedia device (excluding my laptop), I whip out my GP2X...it's cheaper and it comes without the stupid Sony bullcrap. I want to play innovative games, not updated versions of older games with just some better graphics...it's the gameplay that counts. Why else do you think people still play classic 2D games? Because the gameplay rocks. You don't need great graphics for awesome gameplay...and that's what the DS gives us. It gives us some nice visuals, but focuses on a more interesting and fresh gaming experience, the way it should always be. (there are some ports, like any console, but the DS does a much better job of innovating then the PSP)

Feh. I bought both systems. Both have good games. Right now I'm very into Advance Wars DS, but before that I was playing a lot of Burnout and Lumines on the PSP -- and before that, I was playing a lot of Mr Driller 2 and Mario Golf, both GBA titles.

Good games are where you find 'em.

@Anonymous 11:44 AM
lol, you are so cheap. Think about it, you aren't cool cause of that PSP, you are cool cause you THINK you are!

Never seen such ignorance at all XD

   by (Unregistered) - 1999-11-30

i have both, and I dont give a shi* about sales, and you shouldnt either cause its not important, and stop, bi*ching about the PSP, its a nice system, and if you buy one youll stop bi*ching cause youll relize theres nother wrong with it. yes PSP fanboys do come here cause retards like this dumb@$$ makes anti psp flamewar post

   by (Unregistered) - 1999-11-30

If i wanted to play the same mario games from all the other nintendo consoles with a stick instead of buttons, and then complain that all PSP games are ports even though all the games i play are ports, and complain that it does other stuff than video games because im jelous because my console doesnt do it, and i didnt like another handheld simple because im mad that it was made because my handheld has owned a handheld monopoly, than I would like DS. Theres so much stuff PSP can do, and im willing to pay 100 bucks more than just playing video games on a DS, because if i bought a laptop, portable dvd player, Ipod, pocket pc, and all the consoles it can emulate, and all the other things it does it would cost way more than a 100 bucks, so the way i see it is, DS cost 150 bucks, and for just 100 bucks more i can do all the stuff a PC can do...yeah, im willing to pay 100 bucks more, oh, and ps, i dont care what retarded posts you make, PSP is outselling DS in every country sept japan, and its expected to way outsell DS after xmas, seeings how its a "hot product of this christmas"

   by (Unregistered) - 1999-11-30

I originally bought a DS (rather than a PSP) because of the lower price, Nintendo's reputation for good games and durable hardware, and the pre-holidays release time (I actually got it for Christmas).
The PSP sounds like great fun, but instead of asking for a PSP this Christmas, I asked for a GP2X. I still want to get a PSP eventually, but it's not at the top of my list.

The DS costs $130 USD. PSP doesn't do everything a laptop does. And where do you did you hear that the PSP is out selling the NDS in the US and in Europe? Thats just not true. And the thing about the PSP being a "hot product of this Christmas" ... well thats great, I'm glad its such a hot product and nothing else is.

First of all, I think Sony taking 28% of the handheld gaming industry is a big news to begin with. Nintendo has been squashing every competition in handheld industry and taking 28% from Nintendo?? That's a pretty big chunk.

I own both system and love them for what they are. I still play emulators on PSP for the most of time and few DS games and GBA games on DS. Objectively speaking, yes, PSP looks sleek and sexy, no question about it. However, Sony is behind in statistic because of lack of worthy games (Well, personally I don't see THAT many 'worthy' games on DS personally either).

Anyway, I don't care who wins or lose... as long as they deliver worthy games at a reasonable price.

Keep 'em coming!!

ps: oh, Nintendo will probably come up with newly designed DS later because they started it the day they released DS. Let's cross our fingers here....

Well, its me again anonymous 6:35pm. I hope both competitors stay alive. Cause with healthy competition, brings good stuff for us!

And nintendo should really follow sony's design. If you guys ever saw sony's old CLIE pda's. Those designs rocked! The DS should have a rotatable screen. If nintendo desinged the DS a bit better, they couldve made it slimmer and not have those big hinges on the back. Would be cool.

   by (Unregistered) - 1999-11-30

It's 28% of the current market.. not overall sales of all times... overall the PSP takes a much much smaller chunk...
