Nintendo Japan has just released a new peripheral for the Nintendo DS. The peripheral, attached to the GBA cartridge, will take up the entire bottom part of the DS and put it on a sort of platform.

The platform is a motion sensor, and acts as another way to input movement into the DS. You move the DS around on a flat surface and the whole handheld suddenly becomes a mouse with a screen. It's interesting to see how that would work though. It's one thing to sit down and move a stylus around to move your character, but to have to move the whole DS on a steady surface may defeat the whole purpose of gaming-on-the-go. Or, on the optimistic side of things, quite possibly redefine it.

The peripheral will be bundled up with a new game for the DS, Slide Adventure: Mag Kid, which has you play a robot that rebuilds itself from parts of destroyed enemies. The whole thing will be priced at JP ¥ 5,800 (US$ 49) in Japan but there's no word yet if it will be released for the US.
