Could it be true? Could there already be a mod chip for the Xbox 360? Microsoft has stated repeatedly that they have built extra security measures into their new console, but it would appear that the hacking community has already been hard at work! Infinity Mods has announced that they now have a mod chip for the Xbox 360 and they are testing it now. They are expecting to finish testing and start sales in a mere 2 weeks!

No word at this time what functionality we can expect from this new mod chip, but I am sure that the info will be forthcoming soon. We will keep you updated as new information becomes available

Thanks to Jeff and Tom for the heads up!

....OMFG, I was gona wait till this baby hit stores, AFTER PS3, but I guess I'll race towards this first:P

anyway, wtf was M$ doing if this was true?

lol agreed if this is true, it's typical windows security........s**t

Oh, I change my prediction.
360 will rule the nerd world provided installing the chip costs $60~80

Seriously, this is crazy talk. geeks will buy core packs with this chip and buy separate SATA hdds with hacked graphics and power, that will bring forth a massive engine...

...but that's just nerds like me drooling

Yeah - Good move. Bugger all good games out and already there's talk of a chip... Way to go - Kill the effing think like the Dreamcast you BASTARDS!

Oh - And your site's been shut down. HA HA!

Sorry - I value a console that lasts over some cheap effers who want to pirate games all the time!

by Wes Grogan (Unregistered) - 1999-11-30

Additional note - Ignoring the mod/homebrew community for a mo - It's piraters who will benefit more from a chip! Thus I hope M$ are able to counter any modchips produced.

I feel sorry to any homebrewers who would have fun playing around, but I don't want the Xbox to die too quickly - At least with the original Xbox there was a fairly large gap before the 1st chip, so people actually had to *buy* games!

This spells doom more than rejoice!

Anonymous-It's not about pirating for everyone, although certainly there is an aspect to that when it comes to mod chips. Some of us really enjoy the potential of homebrew on the consoles as well as certain emulation capabilities...look at XBMC for the Xbox, as just one example. If the door were opened from the start for legitimate homebrew (as I've stated for years) then it wouldn't be necessary for modders to create chips to allow it and it would also allow the door to remain closed on piracy.

I do have a certain hesitation with this news, though...mainly by the fact that Infinium Labs has still failed to produce anything more than a keyboard, so I wonder what Infinium Mods would produce.

Excellent, can't wait to play my pirate game.
Halo 3 - who cares.
Online play - who cares.
Cheap pirate games - I care

"Excellent, can't wait to play my pirate game.

I guess you work at a minimum wage paying job too?

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

its a big scam. Why would they test that chip for 2 weeks? They can't fix any bugs. They are just resellers.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

chip was already built n tested back late december, then the chip needed to be replicated.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

well, as I said, as a nerd, it can help with separate SATA drive running and also a chip that may be able to run other OS. that gives you a cheap 3 core cpu server at a fraction of the cost

"If the door were opened from the start for legitimate homebrew (as I've stated for years) then it wouldn't be necessary for modders to create chips to allow it and it would also allow the door to remain closed on piracy."

What right do you have to expect this? Consoles are there to sell games, and to play these games - Not to cater to your whim to be able to program yet another damn emulator.

Music - The xbox360 plays music. Rip a damn CD if you want it there permanently. Pictures - Easy to view. I don't know why they won't allow uploads to the HDD, but that may be to stop piracy. Movies - Play the frigging DVD for god's sake - Unless the movie you want to play isn't legal!?!?

What else do you want it to do? Run Linux - For the love of god!

While I love emulators and some aspects of homebrew, this is becoming a joke... "Oh look - The new XYZ is out - I want it to do THIS... It doesn't - Why not, I want it to!!! I'll hack into it then, as all manufacturers should make all things to MY specifications!) That is what you are saying - All things should be customisable because you want it.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

I presume when the PS3 is released, everyone is going to expect it to do Homebrew?

The lord help Sony if they don't allow that, as the masses have spoken and they demand it!

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

Anonymous-The answer is simple and you're using it to read this...it's by right of the computer. The computer allows people to create and run programs easily and safely, and as more people use their computers to do that, they are looking at their other electronics and expecting the same thing. It's not in arrogance that I am stating that they should allow and embrace homebrew development, but is instead a recognition of human nature. The innovation and quality of Indie titles on the PC are absolutely staggering, and it could easily do the same for a console system, particularly one with a built in, very solid online capability. Games for less than $60 that are worth playing, even if in the vein of the excellent Geometry Wars, would be a huge kick in the seat of the consoles that didn't support it.

People want the most out of their electronics. That's rule number one. As long as there is hardware that has capabilities that aren't utilized, people are going to try and change it. Fact of nature.

If im not mistaken the first xbox was hacked fairly quickly, wasent it like 1-2 months after release? Atleast i know the security to prevent hacking was really bad.

Dude Im not american either. As far as made in china goes you can bet your ass that 95% of the profits go to the USA regardless of where its built. Wake up and smell the irony. PS Bush is a dork

Some people just don't get it. Why oh why would somebody find something bad to say about people wanting to run homebrew on a console they spent hundreds of dollars for? If it is capable of more than what Microsoft allows (which it IS) then I'm sure most people would want to unlock this extra ability.

It's not like everybody who puts a mod in a console is a pirate. Personally, I dislike the Xbox 360 for a number of reasons, mainly its multimedia capabilities. I'd like to run other, better video formats than WMV9 and I'd like not to have to buy Windows Media Centre either. I'd also like to be able to store what I want on a HDD i paid for.

Some extreme anti-pirates also forget that some people like to backup games they own, and at the price of games, that's a damn good idea, especially if you have kids who have a habbit of somehow scratching your games. I definitely do not mind circumventing copy protection mechanisms on gaming consoles to save me from buying a game twice - and yes, my kids have done damage to their games in the past, a lot.

And one last thing, you forget that people just like to modify consoles for fun.

With all the above being said btw, I would not bother to install the first Xbox 360 modchip onto a console that is just over a month old. Still don't really believe this is real either.

I modded my xbox and maybe bought 2 games. Decided to buy the 360. Pre-ordered it 3 months ago. Along with it I bought the wireless controllers, HDD, silver faceplate, charge and play kits and 9 games. Spending around $1100. It started freezing up randomely on Madden so I returned the game and got a new one. Got the new game home and within an hour had 2 lock ups. Called Microsoft and spent hours on the phone on hold and talking to phone support people who could barely speak English. They told me to send in the Xbox 360. I sent it in and 1 week later I get a whole different console and hard drive. (without my original silver faceplate)I spend 3 hours on the phone with them again trying to recover my gamer tag for the new HDD. Finally they say the server must be too busy and to keep trying. Finally I get it to work. I pop in Madden and can't even work my way through the menu without it locking up. Reboot and it locks up without even launching the game. Try a couple other games and they lock up. Call the sh**t bags back at Microsoft and I am on hold for 2 hours and they say I can send it in again. I said NO. I want my money back. They said someone will call you back in 4 days. I call up Walmart and ask them if I can return it. They say yes. Will be taking it back and will wait for them to fix the problems and hopefully by then a mod chip will be out. They get what they deserve if a modchip comes out.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

You do know that not everyone are having problems like you. And also at the launch of any console..they have bugs. Wait for the ps3 to come out...they will just as many bugs. Nothing is perfect.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

I don't care about the others whose consoles are working. I understand there are problems on launch but to get 2 bad consoles and have to deal with such ****ty support for the hours I did is unaccetable. I buy all kinds of computers, electronics and Hi Fi equipment and have never dealt with such crappy service in my life. I don't think the support people on the phone have even seen a Xbox 360.
