Lunar Knights. Space vampires. Oh yeah.... - Image 1

After quite a long bit of waiting, Kojima Studios' first foray into the world of the DS, Lunar Knights, is finally available in North American stores for US$ 29.99. And most importantly, it's in English.

An action-RPG title for Nintendo's handheld, the game features a night-day mechanic, as well as real-time weather effects which affect character abilities and encounters. Both of these mechanics are important things to take note of as players launch their quest in hunting evil vampires. In space.

Yes, you heard us right. This game has space vampires, and if anyone can make the idea work, then it would be no other than the people who want to create a stock market-based DS game, who have also managed to glorify the humble cardboard box as the perfect infiltration device.

boxart

It would take a lot of imagination for an ordinary human being to even absorb the concept of this game. The gist? Attack of the space vampires. SPACE vampires. But once you get over the weirdness of it all, you'll soon realize that Lunar Knights is actually quite a good RPG, with its fun night-day mechanic that allows players to hunt down vampires around the clock.

This feature should also provide a realistic twist to the already absurd quest to hunt down space vampires via the real-time weather effects, which in turn gives extra power to the characters' abilities and affects the type of enemies you will encounter.

You can read more about the game here, but what we're here to do today is to show you what we've just come across: the Japanese boxart for Lunar Knights.

News haven't reached our ears yet about the boxart for the U.S. version of the game, but once we do, rest assured you're gonna hear from us. Developed and published by Konami, the game is set for release next month.

Lunar Knights!

Lunar Knights Django and Sabata are at it again, and this time, they're going into space. Presumably to kill space vampires.

Space vampires?!

Well, Django and Aaron are vampire hunters and these latest batch of screenshots depict a spaceship or two blowing stuff up, so as weird as it is, it seems logical to assume something like that, right? It's from Kojima productions anyway, so you can assume the newest version of any game they come out with is bound to have a couple of surprises. From the paraSOL system of switching between characters to having a "pet" elemental you fuse with named Toasty, there's no denying the Kojima spark of weirdness is here.

Lunar Knights

Finally, the Lunar Knights: Vampire Hunters website is up so we headed there to check it out. Also known as Bokura no Taiyou: Django and Sabata in Japan, this game is a prequel to the Boktai series where Aaron (Django) and Lucian (Sabata) also appeared as characters. The site is pretty immersive and has lots of info especially on the characters and the game. It's in Japanese though, so those who can read Japanese can head to the site here.

The goal in this game is simple: slay a number of boss vampires known as Immortals. The game revolves around Aaron, an apprentice sharpshooter who uses a variety of ranged weapons to deal with his enemies like the Knight (uses a Charge Shot, similar to the Gun del Sol), the Ninja (dual-wielded machine guns), the Bomber (explodes in a radius shot), and the Witch (homing rockets).

Also central in the game is Lucian, who is a melee fighter and uses a a sword named Ankoku ken Vanargandr, a scythe named Ankoku gama Jormangandr, and a spear named Ankoku sou Hel. There are also Terrenials that accompany you in the game that are elementally-oriented. Unlike Lucian, Aaron can temporarily become an avatar of the sun by fusing with his Terrenial, Toasty.

We don't wanna spill more of the details as it can spoil the excitement on the game. Anyway, Konami has already released a fair amount of details on the game. Furthermore, the game is set to be released anytime on the fourth quarter this year. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the forthcoming release of this RPG by Hideo Kojima.

Lunar KnightsKonami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today revealed new gameplay details for their upcoming action role-playing game, Lunar Knights. This is the first Nintendo DS game from Hideo Kojima's own Kojima Productions. In Lunar Knights, two heroes - Lucian, a lunar-enhanced warrior of the night, and Aaron, a gun-toting fighter powered by the rays of the sun - must work together using their unique abilities to eradicate the dark threat.

The main feature in this epic vampire-hunting RPG is a unique night and day mechanic that lets players hunt down the armies of the undead around the clock. During the course of the game, the top screen is used for the 'paraSOL' system which shows day passing into night. This mechanic introduces an innovative internal time system that cycles between night and day and generates real-time weather effects, granting additional power to each character's unique abilities while impacting the types of enemies the two heroes encounter on their journey.

See, there's this little known company called Kojima Productions that make these really nice games called Metal Gear something-or-other.

They're coming up with this quirky new game for the Nintendo DS called Lunar Knights, which has almost the same premise as their two earlier handheld RPGs, Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, and Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django. In this case, you get to play as two different vampire hunters tasked with stopping the bloodsuckers from having their way.

What's got our attention in this scan is the name on the page. Django is the hero of the Boktai series, but he is either supposed to have a cameo here, or is one of the main characters, though other sources say differently. If any of you can translate this, maybe you can shed some light on this hero?

Oh, and why doesn't Snake have a cameo here? Such a shame.

Kojima ProductionsAs the Games Convention, the biggest European video games show, draws near, developers begin to spill the beans on what they'll be offering. Hideo Kojima and his company are one of the first, so here's what to expect:
Portable Ops, of course, is the game every PSP gamer has been waiting for, as it finally features true, console-like MGS gameplay and is not just a "side game" like Ac!d and the Digital Novel.

And Lunar Knights is also one of the more interesting things Kojima currently has up his sleeve. Seen as a quasi-successor to the Boktai series on the GBA, the game will be playable with the sun sensor that's included on the Boktai GBA carts and should be one more addition to the growing list of DS RPG games in development.

Should you be planning to attend the Games Convention in Leipzig, Kojima Productions will be located in Hall 5, Booth F02.

Lunar Knights, not to be confused with the Lunar RPG series, is being developed by Kojima Productions at Konami. The game is an original action role-playing game that seems to be more like Boktai with its light sensors plus the fact that Konami made those games as well. Featuring a unique day and night gameplay mechanic, players will be able to hunt down the armies of the undead around the clock as two different playable characters and unleash powerful elemental attacks using the Nintendo DS touch screen. Lunar Knights utilizes a compelling storyline told through high-quality animated cutscenes and unique gameplay elements to deliver an original role-playing experience to the Nintendo DS. Day passes into night in Lunar Knights, as players take on the role of a lunar-enhanced warrior and firearm-wielding fighter powered by the sun, bent on destroying the evil forces of the undead. Go ahead and check out some of the screenshots by clicking on their thumbnails below.
