GDC: ngmoco's Young: iPhone 'Better Than DS, Better Than PSP' - Image 1

Mudslinging between Sony and Microsoft seems to be playing second fiddle these days to mudslinging between the PSP and the iPhone.

The war between the two devices continues on during GDC, where ngmoco's co-founder Neil Young says that Apple's brainchild is "better than the DS, better than the PSP." Oh look he took a hit at Nintendo too. Pretty bold for the leader of a relatively new games company. ngmoco was founded in June 2008, releasing its first two games in October, and another four games since then.

Young points out that iPhone sales has already beat sales of the DS and PSP upon their original release. He continues digging it into Sony and Nintendo:

[The iPhone is] always on, always with you [and] most importantly from a business standpoint, there were no first-party games.

Don't let the haters tell you it sucks compared to the DS or the PSP. It doesn't. It's good. It's clear that the quality of iPhone games is eclipsing its [portable] console counterparts, and that's even more acute when you compare it against the prior generation.

He points out that "graphics and sound alone do not a great game experience make," but because of the iPhone's native device functionality which is to be constantly connected, this gives it an edge over its competition. He cites in particular their new game Livefire, which will feature online multiplayer, social features, and online commerce.

He does make a point, the iPhone does have an edge with its connectivity, which is the strength of the appstore. But connectivity just can't beat good hardware and a good game library. The iPhone is just a powerful phone with a few good games. To say that an edge in connectivity makes it the better game machine may be too large a claim.

Young concludes: "We're at the center of the new everything. The iPhone has revolutionized everything."

LOL.

the psp pwns the iphone when it comes to hardware, but we seriousely need some new games.

   Re: anhero - 2009-03-23
 » You know

I agree with this guy a bit. I hadn't had so much fun playing games since the N64 (N64 is obviously better but you get the point). Iphone games are fun, many of them simplistic yet fun. The touch screen and tilt-sensor also adds a lot to the experience. Hell, I thought emulators would suck because of the lack of real buttons but after playing for a while you get the hang of them (and I did played the PS1 emulator which you know uses lots of buttons). Games run very smooth and homebrew on it is many times better than on the PSP.

Also, what do you all guys mean about iphone not as poweful as PSP? Do your research... Iphone has highers specs (such as processing power, and RAM). For some reason a PS1 emulator was released few months after its release, and Quake 3 Arena runs on it at 40 FPS (Quake 2 doesn't run on the PSP at 40 FPS). Also, the Spore game on it looks better than any retail PSP game...

   Re: senaiboy - 2009-03-23
 » figures

iPhone needs a higher RAM to run games, phone, and other functions at the same time. PSP uses RAM solely to run games. I think that should be taken into consideration.

And PSP's 'real' specs was not released, but initial specs said it has two 333MHz CPU and a 166Mhz GPU.

Sorry I know I'm acting like a fanboy here, but I just had enough of "iPhone trumps PSP" mantra. Just don't keep repeating that, and I won't even say PSP is better than iPhone. Wait, I never even said PSP is 'better' than iPhone, just that they're two different things.

So what did the PSP do to offend the iPhone??

   Re: senaiboy - 2009-03-23

PSP can't run Quake 3 Arena?

How bout iPhone running Resistance: Retribution? ;)

Im not saying the iPhones crap its great and I love it! But it will never compare as a gaming console to those such as the PSP or DS sorry

   Re: anhero - 2009-03-24
 » @senaiboy

the iphone is powerful enough to run games that would excell resistance retribution, it just oesn't have the support at the moment. companies will not create hardcore games for it because sometimes its hard using the touch screen instead of buttons and the people who have an iphone don't have them for games (unlike PSP and DS owners). I still find phone games more fun, and it's a shame few developers actually look on taking full advantge of its graphic capabilities (unlike many homebrew developers on it which actually dedicate themselves to unlocking its full potential, for example Quake 3 Arena). Ohh and the reason the PS1 emulator runs most games at around 20FPS instead of 30 is because the project has less than 6 months. The guys working on a "non-sony" ps1 emulator for the PSP still haven't gotten it to run at over 5 FPS, and most games don't even run or run with horrible graphic problems.

   Re: Djhg2000 - 2009-03-24
 » Just a note...

To bring all of that hardware bull**** out of the picture, I'd say PS2 (299 MHz) won over XBox (733 MHz). To bring that even further, UMPCs (~900-1600 MHz) can run CS, CSS, Q3, Emus and play almost any media file. Still the PSP (2x333 MHz) outsells them.

So stop talking about the iPhone CPU already.

 » ...

All this about the iPhone/iPod Touch being better than the PSP/DS is total BS.

Although, it is getting up there. From a gamers perspective it's hardly something worth running to the store for, but for someone who is in the market for a phone or MP3 player it's the best product out there when it comes to casual games and extra features.

The iPhone is capable of visuals more advanced than the DS and some are comparable to the PSP, yet no developer has yet taken advantage of this to make something that sticks out of the crowded App Store. Even Cydia doesn't have much to offer other than emulators.

Until digital distribution really kicks off on the PSP and DS, nobody would buy a $39.99 iPhone game anyway.

I must say though, there are a few games on the App Store that do make good use of the multi-touch screen and tilt feature.

   Re: TheLastGuitarHero - 2009-03-23

I have one. And ERR. Look at the titles it has. Like many have stated before, it's not an actual gaming platform. Did you want to compare Konami's games to what the PSP has? Because I heard a sprite shooter is just high-quality these days for Metal Gear. And DDR!!? On a phone!?!? Oh man now I have to get one, no wonder this library is just a powerhouse of amazing.

Every game on the iPhone looks like a high quality flash game. Does the iPhone even have flash yet? I don't know, it doesn't matter I guess.

 » point taken...

@thelastguitarhero: spot on! it has many high quality games that are like high quality flash games. still, just as entertaining as flash games, just portable. i'm not saying that the iphone is better than the PSP or the DS. they are completely different categories of gaming. the iphone just offers different things that the PSP and the DS cannot offer.

@techni: i have a jailbroken ipod touch 2g. there are lots of really bad games for both systems. the appstore has over 20,000 apps/games. of course there will be crappy games in the mix, but there are still about 20 iphone games that rock. i can say the same thing about the DS's number of games, lots of small, minigames, but some really strong titles.

btw, PSP will always win in the portable console war. iphone doesnt even fit in it. DS is just meh.

   Re: p0p0 - 2009-03-23
 » No

They've realized its a simple gaming platform. They don't have to work hard at all to make the games they release, and boom, they sell like crazy. The timespan it takes to make and release a game makes it obvious that they are just shoveling out what they can before the inevitable "glitter" of the iTouch dies out and people are no longer interested.

I quote DOOMSTALK from another article.

"Most of the games I've played on the iPhone have been more tech demos than anything I'd want to play for more than 5 minutes. You go "Oooh neat, tilt control!" and then reach for your Nintendo DS."
   by dswforce - 2009-03-23
 » It's all about $$$

Sorry folks, but this is not about the "power" of the PSP.. It's all about "getting your s**t out there" as a developer, and I must say that the Iphone/Appstore is probably the easiest and fastest way of getting your content out there, and get paid!

That platform is great for those who want to make a quick buck, and if the PSP gets this kind of "store" more developers would flock to put their content up there aswell.
Look at the Iphone games today. They're simple & cheap, so of course people are willing to pay a few bucks for a nice timekilling app/game. PSP needs a better DLC store, and Open it up. I really hope SONY have looked at the iphone platform (and others ofc) for future psp generations.

» OMG, another idiot to add to the list

I understand when the normal people compare handhelds, but when some guy I don't even know, or a company I've never heard of, start making accusations, seriously. That's just funny.

First off, like I stated so many times on the internet, people have to stop comparing the iPhone to that of the PSP. The iPhone is a phone, get it out of here, it's no gaming device. The PSP is the device you'd want. Consumers don't buy a PSP for it's calling features, and like wise, comsumers don't but a iPhone for it's gaming features. People have to understand the differences before they can start comparing two totally different handhelds.

Also, the iPhone games are *****ty, no offense, they really are. At least the PSP has a handful of good games. Specs have no part in the matter. You can compare the DS with the PSP, but the iPhone and all other Apple handhelds need to find there own place, because they're not wanted in the handheld gaming industry.

Neil Young, get your head straight before you start comparing systems that aren't in the same league. How unprofessional.

   by yongobongo - 2009-03-24
 » Stop it fanboys.

Stop being such naive fanboys. The PSP is an old piece of technology - wow it has commercial games?! Correct, but 99% of these are complete and utter crap anyway.
I have had an iPod Touch for just over 1 year, and I haven't touched my PSP since (maybe 30 minutes playing GTA with my friend but that's IT).
The iPhone has much better RAM, much better connectivity, and a much better display. All the PSP's got going for it is that it has already got large publishers' games out there.
Give the iPhone some time and PSP will be history. I agree with the above article, the iPhone will always be with you (a major convenience) and the ability to say "hey, I'm bored, let's try this game" and buy a game in a matter of seconds is great for marketing stuff.
You have a PSP, it's old, you've got your worth out of it (hopefully), stop trying to defend your purchase 3 years later. Maybe you like it, that's fine, but accept this - the iPhone _IS_ better than the PSP.

   Re: senaiboy - 2009-03-24
 » common sense?

This is where it irritates me. I was never a fanboy to start with, but common sense and this 'iPhone >> PSP' mantra made me one. It's these baseless comments (not particularly from you) that caused this 'fanboyism'.

Why are you saying iPhone is better than PSP? So its technology is newer, meh, does that make it better for gaming? iPhone is made as a phone. PSP is made as a game console. Both are good in their own rights.

iPhone games are diversionary and don't last longer than 30 minutes. PSP games are for gamers on the go who want a more indepth game to play for hours.

I definitely do not see any similarities between an iPhone and a PSP, in terms of the purpose of owning one.

Frankly, iPhone with its 'touch' technology is much closer to a DS than a PSP, so why not compare it to DS? The DS games are mostly for short bursts of playing as well, aren't they? Oh because the DS is selling craploads more than both iPhone or PSP.

So if you're not just looking for a 'weaker' competitor to boost your ego, tell me. Why compare iPhone to PSP in the first place?? They serve different purposes! Even the games are freaking different in terms of gameplay and control!

I admit I am now a 'converted' fanboy, but at least I'm one with common sense.

   Re: TheLastGuitarHero - 2009-03-24
 » ...

Yongobongo, seeing on how Senaiboy killed your argument, which is great and all, let me point out one more thing...

"All the PSP's got going for it is that it has already got large publishers' games out there."

You say that like it's not even a big deal, "Oh who cares major game publishers are creating software for it, I have a tilt sensor!" If you didn't notice kid, (And I bet you didn't because you're one of the bigger iphone fanboys to state that) that's the biggest difference between them. Do you know why that's the biggest difference between them? Because one is a phone. It's not some kind of gadget that can make toast, fetch your paper, and wipe your ass at the same time. It is a phone. It a phone, that just so happens to be cluttered with 99% "junkmail" programs that everyone adores because they can buy them anywhere. I don't know why it's so hard for some people to realize this, I mean look around this thread, everyone is making great points, and here you are Yongobongo spewing nonsense. I feel like on some scale I've been trolled by just how bad it was.

   Re: yongobongo - 2009-03-25
 » ..

I won't even bother arguing further because I frankly don't care, but the whole iPhone VS PSP VS DS argument is stupid.
I know I am biased, but you are all also biased. Don't deny it because everybody is influenced by opinion.
Granted, I'm not much of a gamer, but I'm not a fanboy.
"spewing nonsense", then what does every single blogger on PSPUpdates spew EVERYDAY?
I just so happen to have the RSS feed on Google and I see bull***** claims such as "X says PSP BETTER than iPhone!" and "Y says DS is going to cop it due to iPhone, PSP safe".
Now you are accusing me of disregarding the only thing the PSP's got going for, it but you are also disregarding all the features of the iPhone.
Let me just finish up and get off this topic which I frankly don't give a flying ***** about (had the same argument the other day with some kid) - the reason I am biased is not because I am a fanboy, I don't even have an iPhone, I am a victim of technology-desire, and also a developer. The iPhone is much better for what I want it for, and I don't really play games anyway. So the PSP really serves no purpose to me.
You are arguing as a gamer, so my argument is not valid to you. So have fun with your PSP whilst I have fun with my iPhone.

» PSP is good but so is iPhone

Well if I was ever once a fanboy then I was a Nintendo DS fanboy...and I dont even own one anymore.
As for the guy who mentioned the price and how would kids afford to buy an iphone? hes more than right, how would they?

I havent done any tests or anything but I noticed that between my 3G and PSP whenever i have friends round or my little cousins, step bro's and sis's etc... they tend to pick up and play my PSP more cause they enjoy the games.
When they DO pick up the iphone there not on it long cause the games just arent the same and find some of the games a little tricky to control.

Either way when this so called PSP2 comes out im sure this little war between handheld gaming consoles will be over for a while because when it comes to full gaming consoles like the DS and PSP deliver, unlike the iPhone which has games as a side feature to the overall device.

What a ridiculous comparison. It's apples and oranges... People bought iphones because it's a PHONE first and foremost, which by nature the DS or PSP are not. Then there's the factor of people jumping on the iphone bandwagon because they simply want to be part of the trend and can't bear to be left behind when all their buddies have one. Factor out those two elements alone and sales comparisons would be a joke. I mean how many people rushed out to buy an iphone JUST to play games on it?
How many rushed out and bought a PSP or DS for the exact same purpose?
I rest my case...
This is like saying a Ferrari is better than a Land Rover... it is, but not if your journey is Paris to Dakar...

do i have to be the guy that points out that the PSP was released four years ago? and it cost $250 on release, i don't think it had the most expensive hardware money could buy, back then.
i think to be fair we should only compair the iphone to the next generation PSP, by then apple will be on their fourth or fifth generation iphone, and it should be closer hardware specs

 » iphone has no buttons

iphone has no buttons...that alone makes for an uncomparable gaming environment. It is completely rediculous touching drawn on buttons on the screen to play games.

Touch screen can only get you so far for gaming.

PSP wins any day of the week! And if sorny would release a real dev kit for homebrew development we can have way better use of the hardware..but what the homebrew coders have done on their own with the PSP is still fantastic!!

 » Actually...

Both the PSP and the IPhone have their perks.

The IPhone is great for multimedia and business applications, and can do more than any game system with downloadable applications. It also boasts a better screen resolution than the PSP. The IPhone is also more portable than the PSP and has a longer battery life. It also means carrying along one less gadget and not filling your pockets.

The PSP is better for gaming because the screen size, while a lesser resolution, is a bit bigger and therefore does not promote as much eye strain, and has better controls for gaming. The IPhone has a touch screen but not enough buttons to properly play games. It is also ideal for multimedia applications, and as a video and music player does its job well enough, but the most attractive feature is cost. Less than $200 vs. $200 to $400 and being locked into a 2 to 3 year contract for the IPhone, that is a huge difference.

The Nintendo DS also has its perks, full game controls and the ability to utilize the touch screen, as well as a great library of games (Nintendo is still the king when it comes to gaming software), and since the focus on this system is more on gameplay than graphics there are plenty of old school style games and 3D games that focus on introducing gamers to originality as opposed to eye candy. Hack the Nintendo DS and you can also run an adequate amount of applications for basic stuff. However, the Nintendo DS lacks the hardware capabilities of the PSP and IPhone.

In the end, it all comes down to what you, the gamer/gadget user, desires. All systems fill a niche and do it well.

» fanboys need to die already!

for those retards that say the psp can't play ps1 games.. errrr.. WTF???

I've played tonnes of them on my psp. The only one that ever lagged on me was suikuden and there's never been a good rip for that.

I have such trouble fathoming where these apple fan boys get off!! They just love to not get their facts straight!

ps1 games on the psp is so old and reliable that it's built into custom firmware crap.

I don't even remember for sure what it's called or how I got it on my machine. it was that long ago.

All i remember is to put the folder of the ps1 game into the game folder and then it plays instantly every time.

Am i *****en retarded? did the apple fanboys mean to say ps2?

what am i missing here?

and I saw a youtube video of a guy playing a bunch of emulators on his iphone.

His screen looked like it had a run in with KFC and the douche missed like 10 coins in mario cause his fat ass fingers where in the way!! And he couldn't even take a medium corner in mario kart.. he crashed.. then he couldn't even recover properly..

THIS IS THE PINNACLE OF GAMING?

Why can't you retards just die already?

Do some of your "research" and find out that poison is better for you than water.. then drink it.

Maybe you won't have to, maybe Steve Jobs will make a powerpoint presentation about the benefits of poison and you will all go together to join that magical spaceship in the sky!

Nobody with a DS or PSP has even bothered to say "Hey Iphone we're better than you" cause were too busy gaming!

You apple fan boy types are just too busy being pretentious C.O.C.K.S!

my uncle even forced me to try his iphone when i went for dinner a few months ago.. i've tried it.. he had tonnes of "games".. I completed the poker game in under 15 mins!

and this whole "oh yes well iphone has high quality flash games" IS NOT A COMPLIMENT! there have been a max of 10 good flash games ever made! SERIOUSLY!

they generally have no depth, length, scope, plot, character development etc etc etc..

their called "mini games" and their called that for a reason!

even the greats, pacman, space invaders, pong, tetris, frogger... they were great games in their time.. and their great for their retro value.. but i might play them once a year. I don't sit down and put in a good 10 hours of gaming into them or play it solidly for 3 months!

real games vs mini games.

It's like comparing movies to short films. Sure, both formats might have some fantastic gems in them.. but some people don't have the time to enjoy a good movie, and other people make the time.

Same goes for games.

just play your short games and shut the hell up.. i don't care! and don't even get started on emulators.. cause psp has all the same ones as u, probably more.. IT'S NOTHING SPECIAL ANYMORE!
