Jack Thompson - Image 1Florida lawyer Jack Thompson certainly had it coming: the anti-gaming activist got served, being found guilty of 27 out of 31 charges against him. For those who haven't been following the anti-gaming circus and the ensuing court proceedings against Thompson's behavior, the lawyer earned the ire of many colleagues and gamers by pulling outrageous stunts to make his stand against video games known.

The presiding judge, Judge Dava Tunis, ruled Jack Thompson as guilty for several charges, which include:
  • Knowingly making a false statement of material fact or law to a tribunal
  • Knowingly disobeying an obligation under the rules of a tribunal
  • Communicating the merits of the case with a judge before whom the proceeding is pending
  • Using means that have no purpose other than to embarrass, delay or burden a third person
  • Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation
  • Engaging in conduct in connection with the practice of law that is prejudicial to the administration of justice, including to knowingly or through callous indifference disparage or humiliate litigants or other lawyers
  • Making statements that the lawyer knows to be false or with reckless disregard as to the truth or falsity concerning the qualifications or integrity of a judge
That's not the end of Thompson's woes, however, with a hearing about possible sanctions for Thompson scheduled on June 4, and Judge Tunis' full report to the Florida Supreme Court due on September 2.

You've got him hooked in real well, Florida, now just reeeeeeeeeeeeel him in and maybe he'll get a taste of Florida State Penitentiary's special blend of "hot coffee". Take the sonuva***** downtown.

This isn't a jailing offense, kids... it's a disbarment offense. He hasn't broken the LAW; he's broken the standards and practices of the Florida bar.

I don't wanna see him go to jail, thats kinda messed up. I just want him to be seen as he is, a really bad lawyer. Hopefully after this he wont be able to take anymore cases against video games.

   Re: Hypodrive - 2008-05-21
 » sure

He harrases people who like, or sell GTA. He's crazy and I don't want him near my game spot.

 » NO JAIL

He is not going to jail as others have said. Basically to dumb it down to an understandable level; he is an 18 yr old that got kicked outta the house for disobeying mom and taking their car without asking. He didnt do anything illegal, just didnt follow the code of conduct set by florida bar.

Strange choice but share the sentiment - I'm in teh UK and even I know what an ass this guy is.

I hope they ban him from practicing law and give him a huge fine. Can they fine him? I hope so...

the news doesnt want the most accurate news, they want the most contraversial news. Everyone can make use of knowing the weather forecast but who needs to know about jimmy that raped a 5 yr old 2000 miles away?

   Re: AeonRelic - 2008-05-21
 » not really

I live in America and I don't even get the extreme remarks here. Nothing he's done has effected us gamers in a major way. It's just good to see him get called on his unethical actions.

   Re: Xastabus - 2008-05-21
 » It's all about the $

Quite the contrary. Because of his actions, developers and publishers have had to waste valuable time and money defending themselves against his frivolous legal maneuvers. One could reasonably say that the cost of gaming has gone up a little more than it should have due to Jack Thompson's actions.

   Re: Nevers - 2008-05-21
» State and Federal Funds were wasted

... tieing up the judicial system with B$ about vidgames should be criminal. He's wasted game-developer company's and taxpayer $$$. He's abused his position in the already sketchy legal system and cost everyone in his zealous pursuit of his prize ambulance.

JAIL would be more $$ down the drain ...wasted on this jak@ss; so I'm definitely more in favor of FINING the holy hell outta him and never let him practice law again. Game-over go back to school for another profession.

   Re: Meseria - 2008-05-22
 » agree with nevers

because jails are overcrowded and WAY to expensive for us taxpayers to pay for things like this. They need another rehaul of the whole jail system. PLEASE go back to the rehabilitation period!

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

I sure hope you guys/gals realize this ONLY means he can't practice law in a Florida court.

This doesn't hurt him on a wide scale.

However, being disbarred in Florida is grounds for being disbarred in other regions as well. We'll have to wait and see.

   Re: Xastabus - 2008-05-21
 » Revoke his license.

I certainly hope he gets his license permanently revoked. Based on everything I have read about him it is as if he never grew out of the terrible twos. People like him really should not be allowed to practice law if they cannot control and conduct themselves in an appropriate and professional manor.

   Re: cizzar - 2008-05-21
» I hope he will be disbarred everywhere in the USA

But does being disbarred in Florida mean all gamers living in Florida can't be bothered by this butthole ?

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-05-21
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

@cizzar - gamers were never bothered by him. Aside from reading the NEWS.

He's not the only one that's after the same "prize". Many organizations want to see mature rated games only being sold to 17+.

What Florida is going to miss out on now on their local news channels is this guys outrageous antics. No more morning or nightly laughter because of this guy.

   Re: Xastabus - 2008-05-21
 » A different view.

I have to disagree. Jack Thompson's actions in the past appear to be directed more toward the "mature games should not exist" spectrum. Only recently has it appeared that he was taking the battle to the store level. This is just my assumption based on memory, however, and is subject to flaws. I, personally, am of the opinion that Mature rated games should not be sold to minors without parental consent. I believe the ESRB rating system needs more positive press and should be followed by retailers the same way Movie ratings are. I know my local GameStop stores already do this and it is a good thing. I am not against Mature rated games. In fact, if not for violent games I would not have an adequate outlet to vent my frustrations.

   Re: Uplink - 2008-05-23
 » @ISOHaven

I was under the understanding that J@T Took and Passed his BAR in The state of Florida. If thats the Case then if he is Disbared in FL He will not beable to practice law in the US unless he goes to another state and retakes and passes the BAR. I could be wrong but it seems like something more sensacle.

And yea he faces no Jail Time but Hopefully he does Face Larger Penaltys than Disbaring

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-05-28
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

It's possible he passed bar in other states as well.

Does anyone here know the intimate details of him? Does anyone want to confess as such?

This doesn't say one way or the other.

 » Thats not all

I was in the court room and heard the judge lay down the charges. The most important charge not listed above was the execution charge. It is possible that Jack Thompson will face the death penality by means of lethal injection.

   by Sephiroth2906 - 2008-05-21
» Thompson is a nut, but...

I started playing video games back when the NES was brand new. Developers want me to keep playing games, so they make games more appropriate for my age. Games are like movies now. I don't believe that Scarface is appropriate for a 14 year old, nor do I believe that GTA is. I do believe that the industry, retailers and the public need to understand that games are not just games anymore, they are an entertainment medium on par with movies. In fact, it is even more important that parents pay close attention to what games their children play as opposed to the movies they watch because of the interactive element of games, making the experience more personal. This dude is a nut, but parents NEED to get the message and raise their children, not stick them in front of the TV with any game they say they want and let that babysit them.

   Re: purple_cow - 2008-05-21
 » yeah

i agree on everything you said. ironically, in thompson's warpath against video games, he misrepresented the responsibility of the industry to ensure the public is aware of the influences of video games.
