Hark, what's that we hear? Ah, it's probably the sound of Nintendo clapping itself on the back as sales of DS top one million in Europe following the handheld's launch on these shores in March this year.

An impressive figure to be sure and it means that, added to global sales figures, the DS has now hit a cool worldwide sales total of over 5 million. Kerching. What contribution has our beloved UK made? Well earlier this month it emerged that UK sales of DS had surpassed 250,000 since launch.

Reacting to hitting the million sale milestone in Europe, Nintendo's European marketing boss Jim Merrick commented: "The European launch of Nintendo DS has been a massive success with sales shattering all previous records in the opening weekend and remaining consistently strong."

"European consumers have adopted Nintendo's sense of fun and innovation to give fantastic support to the Nintendo DS," Merrick added.
