DFC Intelligence publishes some hard numbers about the current state of the console wars - Image 1Year after year we see a vicious cycle of war and hate between the super powers of the video gaming and interactive entertainment industry. People choose their sides and fight for their favorite consoles, hoping to come out the winner in the end. At this stage of the battle, DFC Intelligence has given out their latest forecasts and hard numbers on who's leading the console wars race.

DFC has given out several forecasts and outlooks at the best and worst case scenarios for each console system to see which one will come out on top of the rest.

  1. DFC forecasts that the Wii will sell the most hardware units in Japan and could be the overall worldwide winner. However, the PlayStation 3 could be a strong second. Furthermore, by 2012 the PlayStation 3 may actually lead in software revenue even though the Wii has sold more units.
  2. Under DFC’s best case scenario for the Xbox 360, the system is in a virtual tie with both the Wii and the PlayStation 3. However, unless the Xbox 360 can kick it into gear in the fourth quarter and through 2008, the system will probably finish in a fairly distant third. A big challenge for the Xbox 360 is building a base outside North America.
  3. The PlayStation 3 is looking to make a strong play for 2009 and beyond. For software revenue, the PlayStation 3 looks to be a solid platform for the 2009-2012 time period.
DFC also published interesting numbers regarding the ever rising growth of the PC interactive entertainment market, as well as the portable game market and the definite niche each platform has made for itself already. However, according to their own conclusions, no one was satisfied with their somewhat lukewarm response to the question, "so which console will win?" Their answer: none.

Wow another prediction from the DumbF*ckCenter!
So how do they back up their claims that the XBOX 360 will finish in distant third? "A big challenge for the Xbox 360 is building a base outside North America."
It has a strong install base in most regions already.
It launched over a year earlier and has the most worldwide sales.

Can they explain how a last gen system like the Wii with a next gen price can continue to sell the most units while offering nothing but PS2 ports and washed up mario games? Nope. They just look at a sales graph, and extend the line aparently.
Will the Wii or PS3 ever come out with a game that has 170 million in sales in 24 hours? Do they realize the XBOX 360 has far more software sales than the Wii and PS3 combined? Do they realize games sell the systems, and the systems with the fewest and poorest quality games fail?

I hope these idiots are not well paid for their "graph line extending" analysis.

 » Hmmm!

Are you a 360 owner by chance?

I do agree with you though. I own a Wii and a PS3, but I have to say, DFC have made some bold claims there. I've owned my PS3 for about 3 months now and I've turned my Wii on once in that time, and that was only to see if I had any messages. I think the Wii's novelty will soon wear off (with its mostly child-like game library and no online gaming) and it will be a battle between 360 and PS3. I have to be honest though and say my money's on the PS3 - not because I bought, but THAT'S WHY I bought one. I could go out and buy a 360 right now, but I don't really seem the point - though Halo 3 does look the muts nuts!!!

I have a PS3 and XBOX 360, and I think the PS3 will gain momentum in a year or two when more games and price cuts come out. I love the hardware itself, and eventually it will be fully utilized.

I think Nintendo will get lazy (if they aren't already) and think they can ride this sales wave for years with little effort. Release a few sequels to popular franchises like Mario galaxy, smash bros, paper mario, all those stupid, mildly entertaining games with minimal improvments. Maybe another Zelda and/or Metroid game. In a few months the Wii will be easily available and the montly sales will peak. After that, IT WILL BE A DOWNWARD SPIRAL. People will ask "why all the crappy PS2 ports" "why are the graphics so s*itty?" "why can't I upgrade my firmware for new features?" "Why no media player, DVD player, decent online gaming, etc."

The wii is not a lasting system and will be completely dead by 2010.

"The wii is not a lasting system and will be completely dead by 2010."

Really same can be said for 360 right since we all know that 360 game out in 05 and its current life span or any xbox system is 4 years. possible 5.

So by 2010 Wii and 360 could be dead. While PS3 will still be going on. And this is facts based on the time when gamecube to wii and xbox 1 to 360 time of life. Also i think MS needs to keep the 360 on market for awhile. Cause if they don't they will never make money.

BTW the Wii is a good console.

Its the same claims every other company and market research group has done I don't see what the hissyfit was for.

there was a time i sort of believed all this... but lets face facts

the ps3's 'killer apps' have all been a little poor - heavenly sword? meh. motorstorm? meh. i have looked at the 'upcoming titles' for ps3 (i own one) and am only truly interested in the ff13 stuff and mgs4.
the wii... i got a wii, thinking 'well there are a few good games'... but wiisports lasts about a week before it's boring... zelda is horrible... there are few games i even want on the wii.
and then there's the 360... i don't want any games on that system, but hopefully you've noticed i'm slightly atypical. in fact the 360 just sold a gazillion copies of halo3. there's gears of war, there's some other stuff... ninja gaiden 2 is coming!

what's my point? i don't believe the start the consoles have had says anything yet, i don't believe looking at ps2 will tell you about ps3. and unless nintendo release some better games for the wii it will be forgotten. mario and ssbb look fun.

i don't think the 'research' people have a chance of calling the console wars this time around... they may make a lucky guess but most of their 'reasons' are bogus.

btw the 360 has tanked in japan, but is quite popular elsewhere... you can't really claim it's 'strong' out there. mind you the ps3 isn't exactly winning any awards for sales either.

...ps3 has no strong sales anywhere but the potential is out there with MSG4 and FF13 which the japenese will go all out crazy for once its out and just like psp, ps3 will total outsell all console worldwide when its out >:) Most of the gamers are waiting for those titles. The price of the console will be a simple number to get FF13....

 » Thing is...

Japan isn't a huge market anyways, NA and EU are waaay bigger.

Anyways, who cares, brain washing dumb consumers into buying your product does not make it the best....and selling more units does not make it the best...it really means nothing to me and everything to the companies...so who cares. We will all get our games and our systems will be around untill the next gen...why should we care which company makes more money then the next ?

Also, "predicting" Nintendo as the "winner" is a HUGE no brainer....seriously, do they get paid for this ?

Now let me play devils advocate for abit...

Wii has already "won", but is not a system most harcore gamers will play 10+ hrs a day.

PS3 will be no good until 2009-10, right around when the "next-gen" will start, so why do I want it? 360 is doing good now and even better with H3 but has a dim future (although a few titles like fable 2 down the road will be nice), but by 2010 will have a new system anyways.

I'm not going to say who I think the winner is by those 3 statements...but I think it's obvious which console is the best experience RIGHT NOW....

 » Cool!

So we're agreed... the Wii is a load of dried out, white, chalky dog sh1t lol?!

I had such high hopes for the Wii, but Mister Common Sense is right, Nintendo seems to have got lazy. 95% of Nintendo adverts I see are for the DS. I'm also gonna stick my neck out and say that the Wiimote is not that good either!!! It's good for the pointing side of things, but I think if we're all honest, it's very temperamental in-game. I mean, how many times has Tiger Woods hit the ball when you're raising the club behind you - same problem with the Wii Sports Golf too lol... and it's not my system, as 4 of my friends stupidly bought a Wii, and it happens on theirs! Worth a try I spose, but I don't think the technology is quite there yet.

I might sell my Wii to my friend who (for some reason) still wants one, even though he's played my PS3! Jokes on him though, becuase I'll put the cash towards a 360 as I think it's a good strong system and I what to see what all the Halo 3 fuss is about WOO!

It's like I'm in the 90's again when I wanted a SNES and a MegaDrive lol!

» 360 has still a lot of room

The PS3 I agree is ready for a forward move in 12 - 18 months as it has everything onboard. The Wii will continue to please children but as agreed by gamers both PS and Xbox it is not a next gen console as such.
The 360 on the other hand being basically a PC in architecture has a tremendous amount of development room whilst being able to remain compatible with the games available right now.
It has 65nm coming any moment, the GPU will also go down to 65nm sometime. In singapore they stated that the 45nm CPU is in development and should be ready for testing in 2008. My point here is that by 2010 which is when the Anal ists are predicting that the 360 is a distant 3rd they have not considered that the 360 will be more advanced quieter cooler and capable of so much more than right now without having to rebrand itself as xbox 3.
This for me means that xbox will contiinue to hold its own and sales can continue to grow in a market that is becoming bigger. If I were do play Anal ist i would support an argument that by 2010 and onwards xbox will also have an xbox slim. With a 45nm CPU and GPU and possibly running games from a multi gigabyte flashcard as these will also be cheap by that time. And just maybe Nintendo will again make a real console.

 » Don't care...having a blast RIGHT NOW

I bought the wii to get me thru my 360 getting repaired... played it a lot until I got the refurbished 360. I never play the wii now. I'll keep it only for those vc retro games but all the new games coming out for it only look like pretty good rentals to me. I'll actually be buying stuff for the 360.

... as for the PS3 gaining an edge in 09'... uh who cares? Last time I checked we're still in 07' and there's absolutely nothing on that system I'd be willing to spend that kinda $$$ for. But on the bright side, it has 2-3 xmas's to entice me and come down in price.
